Foraging
- Main article: Foraging
Foraging skill is increased both by gathering forage items found on the ground throughout Stardew Valley and by chopping down Trees with an Axe. Each foraging skill level adds +1 axe proficiency.
Experience Points
Experience points (XP) are granted as follows:
- 12 XP for chopping down a tree with an axe (granted all at once for the last chop that causes the tree to fall).
- 1 XP for removing the tree stump after chopping down a tree.
- 25 XP for removing Large Stumps and Large Logs.
-
7 XP
If the Gatherer profession doubles the foraged item, another 7 XP is granted for the duplicate item.
for each foraged item picked up from the ground.
- 3 XP for each Spring Onion harvested from Cindersap Forest in Spring.
The 7 XP for foraging items applies solely to those items visible sitting on the ground that are picked up only if the player clicks on them; it does not apply to items lying on the ground (e.g., dropped by shaking) that are automatically added to the player inventory by magnetism. Specific items that do grant 7 XP include:
- Standard randomly-spawned foraged items throughout Stardew Valley.
- Items grown from Wild Seeds (except if in a Garden Pot, in which case 0 XP).
- All items foraged from the Beach.
- All fruit collected from the Farm Cave, if the fruit bat option was selected.
- Truffles.
- Forage items spawned on the ground in the Mines and Skull Cavern, namely Red Mushrooms, Purple Mushrooms, and Fiddlehead Ferns.
The following Items do NOT grant any foraging experience:
- Trees felled by Bombs (however, weakening a tree with bombs before felling it with an axe will still give full XP).
- Blackberries and Salmonberries from bushes (whether picked by the player or shaken loose by animals).
- Grapes grown from Grape Starters.
- Items dug up from artifact spots, such as Snow Yams and Winter Roots.
- Items grown in Garden Pots.
- Mushrooms collected from the Farm Cave if the mushroom option was selected.
- Mushrooms obtained from chopping or tapping a Mushroom Tree.
- Non-forage items spawned on the ground in the Mines and Skull Cavern, namely Quartz, Earth Crystals, Frozen Tears, Fire Quartz, and Dinosaur Eggs — except that a causes any duplicates created by the Gatherer profession to give 7XP.
- Forageables obtained from killing Monsters.
- Gingers dug up from the ground

Fishing Minigame | 50g | Play the Fishing Minigame to catch fish. Each caught fish gives between 12 and 25 points. Any non-fish item caught gives 1 point. Bonus points are earned for perfect catches. It is possible to make over 400 Star Tokens per 50g spent. Can be played as many times as the player has money for. | |
Slingshot Minigame | 50g | Shoot the targets with the Slingshot. Each target gives different points — red targets give 1 point, blue targets give 2 points, and purple targets give 5 points. At the end, the player gets a point multiplier based on their accuracy. An accuracy of 100% provides a 4x multiplier. It is possible to win 500 Star Tokens per 50g spent. Can be played as many times as the player has money for. | |
Smashing Stone | Free | At the Smashing Stone the player can test their strength by clicking the stone at the right moment when the bar hits the top or bottom. One Star Token is earned for hitting the top or bottom. | |
Token Seller | 50g per Token | At the Star Token Seller, Star Tokens can be bought for 50g each. This is the least cost effective way to earn tokens, but time-wise, it is the quickest way. | |
Fortune Teller Booth | 100g | At the Fortune Teller Booth, the Fortune Teller will tell the player events from the future for 100g once. This information is based on the Social Status the player has with the villagers. She will tell the player something about whichever two villagers are at the top of their Social menu. If the player has already been to the booth, she will tell the player to go away. | |
Spinning Wheel | Varies | At the Spinning Wheel, the player can bet Star Tokens on whether the spinner will land on green or orange.
Players can quickly earn the star tokens required to purchase all items in the shop by betting green, since the mathematical probability the wheel will land on green is 75%, versus 25% for orange. The probability is not a guarantee for any single roll, however. For efficient profit while protecting against losses, always bet half of the current stars. This can be calculated using the Kelly criterion for bet sizing: Proportion to bet = Chance of Winning — (Chance of Losing / Profit Margin on Win). Simplified for the case of doubling a bet we get Proportion to Bet = (2 * Probability of Winning) — 1 Proportion to Bet = (2 * .75) — 1 = .5 = 50% |

Changing Professions
The in The Sewers allows the player to change professions. After donating 10,000g, the statue requires the player to choose one skill to change. That night after the player goes to bed, the Level 5 «Choose a profession» screen will appear, followed by the corresponding Level 10 «Choose a profession» screen for the skill selected at the statue.
Only skills for which professions have already been chosen will appear in the Statue’s menu. As soon as the player chooses a profession to change, the bonuses for existing professions disappear. Skills that gives bonuses to sell prices will not apply to items placed in the shipping bin the day the profession is changed.

Nations
Ferngill Republic
The nation in which Stardew Valley is located. Kent is a soldier for the Ferngill Republic, and is a survivor from a Gotoro prison camp. Morris believes that the Joja Corporation is good for the country as a whole.
A plaque on the waiting room wall of Harvey’s Clinic reads «This clinic is licensed for medical practice by the Ferngill Republic Health Authority.»
In Livin’ Off The Land, on the 25th of Fall, Year 2, the host mentions that «it’s just a couple of days until communities around the Ferngill Republic celebrate Spirit’s Eve!» This suggests that the holiday is celebrated only in the Republic, but this is not elaborated further.
Gotoro Empire
A nation at war with the Ferngill Republic. Located across the , south of Stardew Valley. The Traveling Cart contains goods smuggled out of the Gotoro Empire.
Storage Options
Inside Farm Buildings
Kegs can be stored in farm buildings.
A Shed, optimally filled with kegs, holds 67 of them, while occupying only 21 tiles of land. An upgraded Big Shed, optimally filled, holds 137 kegs on the same land space. A Barn, however, is cheaper, and holds 90 kegs on 28 tiles of land. The Deluxe Barn increases building costs considerably, but has so far been shown to be able to fit 136 kegs on the same land space as the initial Barn. Coops are cheaper still, but smaller, permitting fewer kegs per tile of external farmland used. Cabins are the cheapest initially, occupy the smallest land area of 15 tiles, but can only hold 42 kegs without upgrades, assuming the cabin is unclaimed and the parsnips and bed must remain. The first level of upgraded cabin can hold 113 kegs at a lower cost than any other option. While the second upgrade significantly raises costs, 351 kegs can be stored in a fully renovated cabin, allowing the largest number of kegs per external farmland used.

Kegs can be stored almost anywhere outside the farm. Out of the way places are best as NPCs walking through a keg will destroy it. Other good options not pictured are the Desert and the Railroad.
Fishing
- Main article: Fishing
Fishing Skill is increased by catching Fish, Trash, Seaweed, Green Algae, or White Algae with a Fishing Rod/Pole or by harvesting Crab Pots.
Each level grants +1 Fishing Rod , increases the minimum fish size (in/cm) and bobber bar height, and decreases the max amount of time before fish bite. Fishing skill also increases the chance to find quality (silver or gold star) fish.

Experience Points
Trash, algae and seaweed caught with the fishing pole earn 3 XP each, and crab pots earn the player 5 XP each time the player collects from them, no matter what is collected. Otherwise, for each catch of fish, the amount of experience earned is as follows:
- Fish Quality = 0 for normal, 1 for silver, 2 for gold, or 4 for iridium
- Fish Difficulty is a number from 5-110, listed in the data file Fish.xnb.
For example, a regular quality sardine (difficulty 30) would net the player (0 + 1) * 3 + (30 / 3) = 13 XP. Trash also follows this formula with a quality and difficulty of zero leaving only the base 3 XP.
XP is multiplied by 2.2 if the player also catches a treasure chest, by 2.4 if the catch was «perfect» and by 5 if the catch was a Legendary fish. These multiplications stack, and are performed in order (first treasure chest, then perfect, then Legendary). If at any point in the calculation the XP is not a whole number, the decimal part of the number is truncated off before performing the next calculation.
For example, catching a perfect Sardine with a treasure chest would earn the player 13 * 2.2 = 28.6 (truncated to 28) XP, then 28 * 2.4 = 67.2 (truncated to 67) XP.
A perfect catch will increase a silver quality fish to gold quality, and a gold quality fish to iridium quality, but it is the original quality that is used in the XP equation.
For example, catching a perfect Iridium quality Sardine would use the original gold quality multiplier, so the player would earn (3 + (3 * 2) + (30 / 3)) * 2.4 = 45 XP.
As another example, catching a perfect gold quality Crimsonfish (difficulty 95) with a treasure chest would net the player 3 + (3 * 1) + (95 / 3) = 37.67 (truncated to 37) base XP; 37 * 2.2 = 81.4 (truncated to 81) XP; 81 * 2.4 = 194.4 (truncated to 194) XP; 194 * 5 = 970 XP.
Experience level is increased immediately upon harvesting a Crab Pot or catching an item with a fishing pole, but the «level up» window doesn’t appear until after going to sleep.
The XP required for leveling up is the same as for all skills:
Lvl | TotalExperience | Total Sardines(No stars) | Total Gold Star Legend Fish(225XP) | Total Crab Pot |
---|---|---|---|---|
1 | 100 | 8 | 1 | 20* |
2 | 380 | 30 | 2 | 76 |
3 | 770 | 60 | 4 | 154 |
4 | 1300 | 100 | 6 | 260 |
5 | 2150 | 166 | 10 | 430 |
6 | 3300 | 254 | 15 | 660 |
7 | 4800 | 370 | 22 | 960 |
8 | 6900 | 531 | 31 | 1380 |
9 | 10000 | 770 | 45 | 2000 |
10 | 15000 | 1154 | 67 | 3000 |
*Note: The first level of fishing cannot normally be completed with Crab Pots, because the player does not have access to bait until level 2. If, however, the player befriends Linus, his will give the recipe for Wild Bait, which can be used to bait crab pots at any Fishing Skill level.
In addition, three crab pots can be earned at any Fishing Level by completing the in the . Completing the bundle without playing the fishing mini-game (or using crab pots) requires 4 fish foraged from the beach and 1 crab obtained by killing crabs in the mines.
Note that an alternative method of gaining Fishing XP is by using Fish Ponds.
