SevTech: Ages

The FTB Launcher

The launcher was released during a livestream by Slowpoke101. The number of downloads initially overwhelmed the server, leaving many users frustrated. After resolving the server issues, a beta version was released. A website, feed-the-beast.com, soon followed. The first production release also suffered from the sheer number of downloads, but the issues were shortly resolved.

The main features of the launcher were:

  • It automatically downloaded a list of FTB modpacks and approved 3rd party modpacks.
  • It automatically downloaded all mod installation files and creation of the minecraft instance.
  • It had full distribution support from all developers of the mods included in the pack.
  • It had a planned set of config files, assigning unique ids to all mod blocks, preventing overlaps that cause Minecraft to crash and were the frequent bane of users trying to manually install mods.
  • It automatically downloaded featured and 3rd party maps, such as the Feed the Beast challenge map.
  • It supported downloading of pre-configured server instances, making it very easy for admins to host the mods on a server.
  • It automatically downloaded featured and 3rd party texture packs.

Twitch Desktop App

Main article: Twitch Desktop App

After a partnership with Curse, Inc., the FTB Launcher was planned to be replaced with the Curse application, later renamed to the Twitch Desktop App. The Twitch Desktop App allows for easier modpack creation, configuration and usage. However, as the application currently does not support Linux, the FTB Launcher was still supported, but it was considered deprecated.

On October 8 2019, it was publicly announced that the partnership between FTB and Twitch.tv had ended. As a result, on November 1 of that year, FTB planned to pull all of its content (modpacks and mods) from Twitch/CurseForge and migrate to self-hosting it. A revamp of the FTB Launcher was released on 6 April 2020. Despite the announcement, the content has not yet been pulled from CurseForge

Alonna Gunn

Alonna Gunn (played by Michele Kelly) was the sister of Charles Gunn, and the most important person in his life. The siblings took care of each other while growing up in the «Badlands» (a fictional neighborhood in Los Angeles). Alonna was turned into a vampire in her first appearance («War Zone»). Gunn eventually found Alonna as a vampire and confronted her, but was ultimately forced to stake her with Angel looking on. Alonna continued to appear in future episodes in Gunn’s memory, flashbacks, and dreams. She was also mentioned in many episodes including «That Old Gang of Mine». It was the death of Alonna that made Gunn receptive to Angel’s help and also caused him to drift away from his old crew, as he was tired of seeing his friends «picked off one by one».

Recording and production

Beast was recorded at Sonic Ranch studios in Tornillo, Texas; and was produced by Mark Lewis.

“The record is extreme,” vocalist Dez Fafara told Revolver magazine. “And it attacks from start to finish. If you liked The Last Kind Words, this is like that on steroids and crank, driving a Buick Skylark 200 miles an hour straight to Vegas.” “I felt like I was waking up and experiencing a moment of clarity that brought out all these pissed off, negative emotions,” Fafara said of making the album. “It’s an all-out release of pain. “It’s been a beast of a year and a half, and it’s still going,” he added. Regarding the new album’s musical direction, drummer John Boecklin stated, “It’s interesting to me — it’s not the fastest shit we have done, nor the slowest, just lots of groove. But to me, when people say ‘it’s got groove,’ I think it’s a nice way of saying simple and boring these days. We wanted to avoid this. “Our record has a great contrast of dark riffs, stomp bouncing drums with the right amount of blasts and double bass, and outstanding vocal delivery from Dez that takes it past your average approach of the metal attempt. I’m not talking about reinventing the wheel or nothing. I just think our new album sits in its own corner from any of our other albums.”
The band recorded 14 songs during the Beast sessions, with 12 tracks making the standard version of the CD and all 14 songs appearing on the special edition.

Plot

Context

The novel portrays a near-future in which the feednet, a huge computer network (apparently an advanced form of the Internet), is directly connected to the brains of about 73% of American citizens by means of an implanted device called a feed. The feed allows people: to mentally access vast digital databases (individually called «sites»); to experience shareable virtual-reality phenomena (including entertainment programs, music, and even others’ memories); to continually interact with intrusive corporations in a personal preference-based way; and to communicate telepathically on closed channels with others who also have feeds (a feature called m-chatting).

History

Slowpoke’s image of «The Beast».

Feed The Beast was originally created as a custom challenge map, developed by a small team led by Slowpoke. It was announced on February 24th, 2012 on the Minecraft Forums. The map was a Sky Block map; the player spawned on a small platform in a void world, and must overcome a series of challenges. Using the tech mods in the modpack, these goals would be checked and give rewards automatically.

The map was adapted to allow multiple players to compete against each other in a race to complete the objectives. This version gained large popularity after being live-streamed on Twitch.tv with Direwolf20 competing against Mattabase, both very well known users of the mods included in the map.

After the map was released, the FTB Team decided to simplify the installation of the modpack by creating a launcher to automatically distribute the map, mods and configuration for those interested in playing it.

The map went through various iterations, including the bedrock map — known for the challenge and reward structure made of bedrock. However most players that refer to the «FTB map» mean the pyramid map, known for its large basalt pyramid that included various rooms that listed a set of items the player had to create in order to solve each challenge. That version was then updated to a harder version, known as FTB Insanity, which took many players 50 to even over 100 hours of play time to fully complete.

Slowpoke’s FTB mod pack announcement image.

After hearing about many players using the modpack without playing the modpack, Slowpoke announced the creation of a new, general kitchensink modpack on August 13th, 2012 with a post on the Minecraft Forums.

An important feature of the new modpack was the solicitation of permissions from the mod developers prior to inclusion of that developer’s mods in the FTB modpack, which had previously caused Technic controversy.

The modpack was centered around mods built using Minecraft Forge. It initially focused on mods of a technical theme, such as IndustrialCraft 2, BuildCraft, and RedPower 2, but it expanded to include magic mods like Thaumcraft 3 and Mystcraft.

The initial mod pack was released as a beta in November 2012. It stayed in beta status for some time because of the necessity for mod authors to update their mods to Minecraft version 1.4, where everything became server based. This process proved a long road for a few of the mods that were core to the pack.

Other versions of the FTB modpack were created, including a Lite version, which slimmed down the list of mods to assist new users learn the ins and outs without being overwhelmed. A Magic World version, which focused on mods of a magical nature, was also released.

Many recent FTB modpacks include built-in quests with Hardcore Questing Mode, and some focus on other themes and difficulties. FTB Infinity Evolved contained two modes: a normal mode and an «Expert Mode». In the Expert Mode, several of the recipes of various blocks and items were modified, forcing players to progress through many mods’ tech trees in order to progress. FTB Infinity Evolved has sometimes been cited as the most popular Minecraft modpack in history.

Sculpting Engineer

Modules

Server Tools has four modules: Core, Backup, Teleport, and Permission. Core is the main bulk of the mod, and is required to run any other modules from Server Tools. The others can be installed/uninstalled as the administrator pleases.

Core

The Core module has many different basic functions and uses. It is required for the other modules to run. Newly generated chunks in the Minecraft world will have a bedrock layer that is one block deep. Blocks broken by players or fake-players can be logged, with a new file for each day. Block logging can be enabled/disabled. Users can be silenced from chat or be made to stand out in chat. When a user is silent, they will not be able to send any messages. When a user is voiced, they will have a + next to their name, similar to wikipedia:IRC. A message of the day, apart from the one in the server.properties file, may be shown to users when they log in. This message will be displayed in chat on user-log in, and will only appear to that specific player.

All of the commands listed here are the defaults. These can be changed and disabled in command.cfg.

Backup

The Backup module allows the administrator to automatically and/or manually back up the server worlds. It can be configured to run on a schedule or performed manually. When the backup is performed, the world will be compressed into a zip file and added to the specified directory. Backups can be automatically deleted when the maximum age of the backup, maximum size of the directory, and maximum number of backups in directory are met. The oldest backup will always be deleted first.

Default Command Name Description
/backup Manually begins backup

Teleport

The Teleport module allows for players to manually teleport around the Minecraft world. Players can set a home to teleport to. They can also set teleport locations that all users can teleport to. It also adds a command to teleport to the last place that the user teleported to or their last death location.

Default Command Name Usage Description

Permission

The Permission module allows server administrators to create groups, which can have their own allowed commands and permissions. Groups must have a list of allowed commands, a list of members, a list of subgroups (if any), and a color for chat messages by users in that group. A subgroup is a smaller group, typically with less power, that is included in the main group.

Default Command Name Usage Description
