Praetor (space marine)

The Golden Legion

10,000 years ago the Custodians were created by the Emperor as his companions and sworn bodyguards. While they were created to defend the Throne World, the Adeptus Custodes have recognised that the most effective way to safeguard Terra is to take a proactive hand in the ongoing battle against Mankind’s innumerable foes. Guided by psychic divination and the intelligence gathered by shadowy agents, they strike down demagogues and warlords who might otherwise raise invasion forces against the heart of the Imperium.

The Adeptus Custodes never exceed ten thousand warriors at any given time. Fortunately, a single Custodian Guard is the equal of entire regiments of any other soldier, meaning that you’ll triumph despite being constantly outnumbered in battle. Equipped with the finest wargear that the Imperium can provide, your forces will be able to wade into the enemy. As bolts thunder from the guns of their guardian spears, swords and axes, their gilded storm shields deflect shots and blades as they fight and slay the enemies of the Emperor.

Recruitment and Training

Main article: Creation of a Space Marine

Recruits are chosen from the best warriors among humanity. Naturally, this makes Feral Worlds prized recruitment grounds, as such harsh and primal conditions produce the best warriors. However, Hive Worlds are considered the ideal source of potential recruits, the populace of the lower levels composed of some of the most murderous scum in the human Imperium. Whole gangs of hive scum are sometimes hunted down and captured for recruitment. Among the most valued traits in a recruit are aggression and psychotic-level killer instinct. Much more rarely, certain Civilised Worlds are also recruited from.

The potential recruit is first subjected to testing, including tissue compatibility tests and psychological screening. Relatively few get past this initial selection process. Those that do pass are termed «neophytes», and the process continues with the surgery, indoctrination, conditioning, and training that will make them Marines.

The surgical process takes a great deal of time. The recruit receives implants, along with chemical- and hypnotherapy, and training necessary for allowing the functioning and development of the implanted organs. The implants transform their bodies and minds and give them inhuman abilities — making them capable of spitting acidic venom, absorbing the memories of the dead by eating their flesh, darkening their skin to protect it from radiation, and operating for long periods without sleep by switching off parts of their brains at a time. After this implantation process and the associated training, the recruit becomes an «initiate».

Intense indoctrination and conditioning strengthens the recruit’s resolve and increases mental capabilities, honing them into dedicated and merciless warriors. After more general training, they join the Chapter as full «brothers».

Characters

  • Captain Titus — Titus is the player’s character. He commands the Ultramarines 2nd Company in defence of the Forge World of Graia.
  • Sergeant Sidonus — Sidonus is an aged Space Marine Veteran Sergeant who serves as Titus’ second in command and the leader of the 2nd Company’s command squad. Sidonus was slain by the Chaos Sorcerer Nemeroth when the Traitor Marine appeared behind him through a Warp portal on a landing platform near the Orbital Spire and pierced Sidonus’ torso with his Terminator Armour’s Lightning Claw.
  • Leandros — Leandros is a young Ultramarines Battle-Brother who is about 75 standard years old (considered young for a genetically-enhanced Astartes), who looks up to Captain Titus as a mentor. Leandros believes that the precepts of the Codex Astartes should be followed almost religiously. Leandros accuses Captain Titus of heresy before the Inquisition because the Codex warns that only those that align themselves with Chaos can resist the touch of the Warp and during the campaign on Graia Captain Titus proved to be unusually resistant.
  • 2nd Lieutenant Mira — Mira is the commanding officer of the remaining Imperial Guard units of the 203rd Cadian Shock Troops Regiment on Graia who were the initial defenders against the Ork invasion of the Forge World after they were diverted to the benighted planet from another war zone.
  • Inquisitor Drogan — A Radical Inquisitor of the Ordo Xenos who developed an arcane technological device capable of opening up multiple portals into the Warp. Drogan was slain and his body possessed by a Daemon from the Warp at the direction of the Chaos Sorcerer Nemeroth, who used him as a pawn to trick the Ultramarines who arrived on Graia to bolster the world’s defences into activating the device. Drogan had deceptively named the device the Psychic Scourge and claimed that it could kill all of the Orks invading the planet by overloading the Greenskins’ gestalt psychic field of WAAAGH! energy and destroy their minds. Instead the Psychic Scourge was actually intended to open portals into the Warp from realspace and bring the Chaos Sorcerer Nemeroth, a horde of daemons and the warband of Chaos Space Marines known as the Chosen of Nemeroth to the Forge World.
  • Corporal Antioch — One of the remaining Imperial Guard soldiers who survived the Ork invasion on the Forge World and who assists his commander Lieutenant Mira, Captain Titus and the Ultramarines.
  • Grimskull — Grimskull is the Ork Warboss leading the Ork invasion of Graia. He was slain by Captain Titus after the Warboss ambushed the Captain.
  • Nemeroth — A Chaos Space Marine Chaos Sorcerer and leader of the warband of Chaos Space Marines called the Chosen of Nemeroth that invaded Graia after Drogan opened a portal into the Warp. He was killed by Captain Titus during his final transformation into a Daemon Prince.

The Great Devourer

They came from outside of our galaxy – a predator from some distant, forsaken place. Part of a unknowable vast gestalt consciousness known as the Hive Mind, the Tyranids are bio-adapted monstrosities who endlessly travel the stars in search of biomass, consuming entire planets in order to grow and adapt, falling upon worlds in waves until nothing remains but ash and acid-scarred rock. They cannot be bargained with. They cannot be stopped. They are the Tyranids, and they will not cease until they have devoured the universe.

Tyranids offer you a seemingly endless horde of single-minded beasts and hulking monsters armed with claws, talons and bio-weapons. Tyranid armies are incredibly distinctive, using alien creatures where other armies might have tanks and planes! A vast range of models means your choice of tactics is up to you – maybe you’ll take an elite force of armoured, towering brutes, or perhaps a devastating line of bio-artillery backed up by nightmarish alien psykers. After all, to adapt is to survive!

Mark X Phobos and Omnis Armour

The Mark X Power Armour worn by Primaris Marines is a marvel in design — a modular, adaptable system of ceramite plating that can be adjusted for multiple tactical roles, from the Phobos Pattern designed for scouting and reconnaissance and used by Vanguard Marines all the way up to the heavy Gravis variant worn by Aggressor Squads.

However, the Phobos pattern eschews a certain amount of ablative covering in favour of agility and speed.

Regardless of its pattern, Mark X Power Armour is designed to attach to a special undersuit worn by each Primaris Marine, enabling it to be fitted in different configurations according to need.

Amongst the Vanguard formations, there is no standard Power Armour style, though Mark X Phobos Power Armour patterns are most common due to the nature of their combat doctrine. However, each squad bears its own unique composition, tailored to its particular need.

The Phobos armour adopted by Vanguard Infiltrators and Reivers, in particular, is this lighter variation of the standard Mark X pattern that offers increased manoeuvrability and quieter, almost silent movement because of lighter armour plating and servo-motors that run almost completely silent.

Eliminator Squads utilise an even more stripped down version of the same Phobos armour pattern, allowing them to operate with maximum stealth as they stalk their prey.

On the other end of the scale are the Suppressor Squads, fire support warriors clad in Mark X Omnis Pattern Armour — a fourth variant of the Mark X that is a blend of the heavier Gravis configuration and the lighter Mark X Phobos versions favoured by other Vanguard Space Marine units.

Psychic Resistance

Titus has displayed a potent resistance to the psychic powers unleashed by the servants of Chaos on multiple occasions, the origin of which is unknown but which has laid suspicion upon him of somehow having been corrupted by the Ruinous Powers.

There is no sign of such a taint, nor has the captain been deemed to be a psyker, so the nature and scope of this resistance remains unknown at the present time, though this ability led to Titus’ arrest after the campaign on Graia by the Inquisition.

It is presumed he is currently undergoing a rigorous interrogation and tests of purity at Inquisitor Thrax’s hands.

The Incorruptible

The Grey Knights are the Emperor’s Daemon hunters. They are a highly specialised Space Marine Chapter whose existence is known only to a privileged few, and whose deployment is the ultimate sanction against the powers of the warp. Based on the moon of Titan, shielded from detection by vast and sorcerous wards, they have their own fortress-monastery whose defences are all but impenetrable, and whose deep catacombs contain labyrinths of dark secrets and forbidden lore.

Silver-clad psychic templars, the Grey Knight are selfless warriors who risk all to hold back the threat of Humanity’s eternal damnation. Just as the battle-brothers of the Grey Knights are a superlative evolution of all that it means to be a Space Marine, so too does their Chapter Armoury contain some of the greatest war machines in the Imperium. While they excel in combat against the creatures of the warp, they will fight any enemy that threatens Humanity, even those from within the Imperium itself. Unleashing their psychic might, nothing can stand in their way.

For the Greater Good!

The T’au Empire are a recent contender in the great game of the 41st Millennium, rising among fallen empires and intergalactic predators through diplomacy, unity and a simply terrifying amount of firepower. Optimistic and forward-looking, they push the borders of their fledgling dominion ever forward with well-trained and superbly armed cadres made up of infantry, alien auxiliaries and super-advanced battlesuits. Woe betide those that see the T’au Empire as naive, for this young faction will stop at nothing to bring the “Greater Good” to the galaxy.

The T’au Empire offers nigh-unmatched shooting, boasting firepower few forces can dream of. T’au armies eschew the monsters, madmen and magi used by other armies, instead giving you access to towering battlesuits and bizarre alien auxiliaries. Maybe you’ll field a fast-moving strike force of rapid assault mechs, or create a defensive line of Fire Warriors capable of obliterating anyone who dares get close. T’au models have a high-tech aesthetic and super-modular kits that let you customise your battlesuits to meet any battlefield need – or just what you think looks the coolest!

Dawn of Waaagh!

Orks are hulking creatures quite literally born to fight, a deadly alien race that loves nothing more than a good scrap. Led into battle by hulking Warbosses, Ork hordes known as Waaaghs! leave utter ruin in their wake, as roiling, seemingly endless hordes of Boyz cause merry havoc with scavenged weapons and wargear. To the Orks, might makes right – and few are as mighty as they.

Ork armies are as diverse, punchy, and bonkers as Orks themselves! From the nigh-legendary “green tide” of choppy Boyz, to rumbling armoured columns, to Dread Mobs of clanking walkers, Ork armies are generally characterised by devastating (and inaccurate) firepower and bruising melee skills. Orks are wildly unpredictable to both you and your foe, ensuring no two games are the same and offering all sorts of hilarious moments, while for painters and collectors, the range is a playground for vivid paint jobs and crazy conversions.

Equipment

The primary individual weapons of the Space Marines is the boltgun and its pistol variant, the bolt pistol.

The distinctive Power Armour is worn by all Marines in battle. Some members of the Chapter’s first company may instead be armoured in the heavier Terminator Armour. Carapace armour is worn by Scouts instead of power armour. There is also a fourth type of armour called Artificer armour, worn by most Marines who have served three centuries for the Emperor or performed a notably brave action in battle.

Often every Space Marines Chapter have its own distinquished color scheme. Unlike the Astra Militarum Space Marines don’t use the camouflaged uniform because Adeptus Astartes doctrine does not follow the tactics of concealment in battles. Bright and bold color schemes lower enemy morale, announcing the arriving of the noble Chapter to the battlefield. The exceptions to the main colors may still exist for some of the Chapter’s Companies — for example Deathwing company of the Dark Angels Chapter use white color scheme and the Raven wing — black.

In the same time Chapter’s vehicles may be painted in different colors until the large bands of areas painted in the Chapter colors.
