Plants vs. zombies (series)

Gameplay

Plants vs. Zombies 2 is a free-to-play game, unlike its predecessor, supporting in-app purchasing of coins in order to utilize certain power up abilities: Plant Food, a new power-up, allows plants to power up for varying amounts of time. Each plant has its own ability when given Plant Food. Players can complete the whole game without purchasing these abilities, some of which can be earned throughout the game instead of being purchased. Additionally, users can level up their plants using Seed Packets (found in-game or bought with real money) to allow them to permanently enhance their abilities.

Players can start an optional tutorial which takes place in front of the player’s house. Afterward, the player travels to Ancient Egypt and can win in-game World Keys by completing Day 6 to unlock a series of additional period settings («worlds»); this required a certain number of stars in earlier updates. As players go through levels, they unlock new plants each with advantages and unique boosts.

Trivia

  • Nate and Patrice make their second appearance in this book.
  • A Stone Age and a Disco world is seen in the book series.
  • The cover features these following characters:
    • Plants: Peashooter, Repeater, Pea Pod, Bloomerang, Twin Sunflower, Bonk Choy, Split Pea, Tall-nut, Blover, Snapdragon, Magnet-shroom, and Jalapeno.
    • Zombies: Pirate Zombie, Cowboy Zombie, Imp Mummy, Seagull Zombie, Ra Zombie (defeated), and Zombot Plank Walker (silhouette)
    • Others: Crazy Dave, Penny, Nate, and Patrice
  • One of the pages in the book features a Snow Repeater.
  • Timepocalypse is a portmanteau of «time» and «apocalypse.»
  • This book shows the full body of Potato Mine on one of the pages.
  • It makes a cameo in the Z7-Mech trailer located on a desk.
  • The zombies and Crazy Dave this time, travels back through time with a different reason.
  • In the Stone Age, Nate and Patrice did not meet the primitive plants from Jurassic Marsh, but they meet giant plants from the original Plants vs. Zombies, such as Giant Sunflower, Giant Peashooter, Giant Wall-nut, Giant Chomper, and Giant Cactus.
  • When Zomboss is defeated, Patrice punches him in the stomach, causing him to fall over and groan «Ooo…my pancreas…». This is a reference to the original Plants vs. Zombies, where Crazy Dave lists one of Zomboss’ possible weaknesses as his pancreas.

Reception

We need more gems and sprouts.
This section is currently under construction. You can help expand it; it’s your choice.

The game received mostly positive feedback from users and critics, despite the use of in-app purchases. Critics mostly praised the gameplay and graphics. It has a Metacritic score of 86/100 based on 36 reviews. PopCap Games announced at Gamescom on August 20, 2013, that the game had been downloaded 15 million times, making it the most successful EA mobile game launch.

Ten days later it was announced that the game had been downloaded 25 million times, exceeding the lifetime downloads of the first game. Apple chose Plants vs. Zombies 2 as a runner-up for 2013 iPhone game of the year. However, many people complain about the several microtransactions the game has, as well as having strange difficulty spikes throughout the adventure mode.

History

In 2010, there was an unlicensed and somewhat limited clone of Plants vs. Zombies available, called «Plant Guard,» however it was soon removed from Android Market. On May 31, 2011, the official version was released exclusively on the Amazon App Store, and on December 14 the same year it was released on Android Market. Feature-wise, it was the same as the Nook and Kindle Fire Editions.

Note: It is incompatible with Androids lower than 2.1 (Eclair Operation System), Motorola DROID series devices, and with Androids of a screen smaller than 3 inches (7.6 centimeters).
There’s a special version of Plants vs. Zombies for the Kindle Fire. The link on the Amazon Appstore is here.

On June 20, 2013, an update was released adding 17 mini-games, I, Zombie, Vasebreaker, Last Stand, Survival, Zen Garden, and new Achievements to the Android and Kindle Fire editions. The Amazon App Store, however, has only recently given the Kindle Fire edition its update.

On October 31st, 2014, the game was available for free on Kindle Fire devices for a day, in order to celebrate Halloween. The offer ended on November 1st, 2014.

Currency

This game had four different currencies:

  1. Coins. These were periodically generated by town buildings. Planting a plant in the planter boxes in town costed coins. More advanced plants costed more coins.

  2. Zombucks
. These were dropped by zombies, and were given to the player as rewards for completing quests and beating stages in road-trip mode. Zombucks were used in town mode to buy and upgrade buildings, place decorations, clean up the town and summon zombies.

  3. Gems
. These were purchased with real money, and could be converted to the various resources at a predetermined ratio. Gems were also used to expedite wait times for constructing or upgrading buildings.

  4. Sun
. These dropped in battles against zombies from the sky, and are periodically created by Sunflowers. Sun did not carry over across battles.

Each level a zombie gains, his health and attack damage will be multiplied by 1.3.

Projectiles

To fight zombies, certain projectiles are fired from plants. For example, peas are fired from peashooting plants, such as Peashooters, Snow Peas and Threepeaters. Spikes are fired from Cattails and Cacti. Spores are shot from Puff-shrooms, Scaredy-shrooms, and Sea-shrooms. Fumes are shot from Fume-shrooms and Gloom-shrooms. Lobbed-shot plants each fire their own specific kind of projectile such cabbage or melons. Stars are fired from Starfruits. Lobbed-shot plants such as Cabbage-pults, Kernel-pults, vs, and Winter Melons can also shoot over shields and hit Snorkel Zombies while they are underwater, although they cannot hit Balloon Zombies, despite the fact that they shoot high up, and corn cobs are launched from Cob Cannons.

Note: The table below is about the damage of the projectiles. The numbers are the amount of peas equivalent in damage to the projectile, and a normal Zombie takes ten peas to kill.

Type of plants

Plants received when playing Adventure Mode

At the end of each level of the player’s first playthrough of Adventure Mode, a new seed packet of a plant made by the Bloom & Doom Seed Company is received from the last zombie to get destroyed. There is a theory that Crazy Dave throws them, according to a Sneak Peek to the Xbox 360 Version. Once the Suburban Almanac is acquired in level 2-4, a sometimes humorous quote of each plant can be read as well as a summary and helpful facts about it.

Plants received at Crazy Dave’s Twiddydinkies

Once Crazy Dave’s car key is found, Crazy Dave’s Twiddydinkies is unlocked and more plants can be purchased with Money. These plants are called upgrade plants. They are the Gatling Pea ($5000), Twin Sunflower ($5000), Gloom-shroom ($7500), Cattail ($10,000), Winter Melon ($10,000), Gold Magnet ($3000), Spikerock ($7500), and Cob Cannon ($20,000). Imitater ($30,000) is also available here but requires completing Adventure Mode before he can be bought. Other upgrade plants will arrive after receiving certain objects, such as Gloom-shroom and Cattail being available to buy when you receive the taco.

Sun producing plants

Sun producing plants are vital for regular levels in order to plant. Each plant has a certain amount of sun that is needed in order for it to be planted. Also, the seed packets for plants have a recharge time; some of which are longer than others. In Survival: Endless, upgrade plants cost 50 more sun to plant for each of that particular plant on the lawn at the time of planting. Below are the costs of sun producing plants and how much sun is produced.

Name Cost Sun per production
Sunflower 50 25
Sun-shroom 25 15 before growing, then 25 sun after growing (grows after producing five small sun)
Twin Sunflower 150 50 sun per production
50 50 sun per production
Type Value Produced by
Big sun 50 Sky in Sunny Day
Normal sun 25 Sky in daytime levels, Sunflower, Sun-shroom after growing, Twin Sunflower, Giant Sunflower
Small sun 15 Sun-shroom before growing

Money producing plants

The Marigold is the only money producing plant, but in the Zen Garden, all plants will drop gold coins when fertilized, happy and also drop diamonds when fully grown. Feeding chocolate to plants in the Zen Garden will produce coins faster. Gold Magnets and Stinky the Snail aid in money production as well.

Trivia

  • The zombies in the online version will usually have no bone seen upon losing their arm.
  • For the Squash, Wall-nut and Cherry Bomb, if the player did not select them in consecutive waves of Survival: Endless, they have to recharge even if it is not the first wave (unlike all other versions of Survival).
  • The zombies will not attempt to eat the instant kills (except Chomper), similarly to Plants vs. Zombies 2.
  • There are two glitches with the Newspaper Zombie

Another glitch with Newspaper Zombie is if he loses his newspaper while eating a plant, he will be walking in place eating the plant.

: when falling on death, a bone in his arm will appear, and his eyes will flash angrily for no reason.

  • Unlike the full version of Plants vs. Zombies, the Survival Mode and the Mini-games mode are on opposite buttons, since the Mini-games mode is not available on the web version.
  • If the player beats the game, the plants will reset, so they cannot use mushrooms during the day.
  • Unlike the full version, instead of the Potato Mine, the player will get the Squash in the Adventure Mode’s Day levels.
  • One can see the silhouettes of the Ice-shroom, Doom-shroom, Lily Pad, Potato Mine, Threepeater, Tangle Kelp, Jalapeno, Spikeweed, Torchwood, Tall-nut, Cactus and Blover when the player has unlocked Fume-shroom.
  • The Snow Pea makes a different sound effect when it shoots frozen peas on the online version than it normally does (a «jingle bell»-like sound effect).
  • The seed packets are much bigger in this version.
  • There is no shadow below the plants or zombies in this version.
  • If the player puts their mouse over the Giga-Football Zombie, it will say «Football Zombie». This is because there is no regular Football Zombie in this version.
  • Level 1-5 is the only mini-game level.
  • Level 1-10 is the only conveyor belt level.
  • When the player leaves an Adventure Mode, Survival Mode, or Puzzle Mode level, the progress will be lost instead of saved.
  • If you keep doing the beat level command and do not pick up any seed packets, then in the next levels, you will be stuck without plants on the seed selection screen.
  • There’s a seed selection screen glitch that allows you to select a different amount of plants than just 6, and it is even possible to select none. However, it is not possible to select more than 6. You need to select 6 random plants (Do not pick Sunflower or Sun-shroom) and the game will show up the «No Sunflower» warning. You need to click the plants in the bar (without closing the warning) to remove or select them. You can still click «Continue anyway» to start the game. This only works in Adventure Mode.
  • This is the only known version of a PvZ game where the game provider explicitly allows hacking.
  • If one were to spawn additional zombies in Level 1-5 (The Wall-nut Bowling game), then the following zombies would act like so:
    • Basic Zombies, Flag Zombies, and Conehead Zombies are already in this level.
    • Buckethead Zombies will take 3 Wall-nuts like usual, but on the first hit, the zombie will be wearing both the undamaged and damaged buckets.
    • Pole Vaulting Zombies will jump over a Wall-nut first, and then take a hit, like normal.
    • Newspaper Zombies will die instantly instead of getting angry.
    • Screen Door Zombies will also die instantly. The screen door is completely ignored even if you hit it directly.
    • Giga-Football Zombies will take 5 Wall-nuts or 2 Explode-o-nuts to beat because of their high toughness.

Glitches (Archived)

  • After the first server update, the level progress bar was unintentionally hidden under the score bar. This was fixed in the 15.1 update.
  • During the Graveyard Trick ‘Grave Danger!’, a gravestone can rise on a tile occupied by a plant. The plant will function normally, but Plant Food and Tacos can’t be used on it until the gravestone has been destroyed.
  • Under unknown conditions, the game can softlock at the end of the stage. This can be fixed either by digging up plants or force closing the game.
  • When a player tried to donate seeds in their club, a pop-up that said ‘Donation has expired’ would cancel the action and temporally remove the seed request from the player’s list. This glitch was fixed in the second server update.
  • When a Crossing Guard throws a road cone onto a male Browncoat Zombie’s head, the male zombie has a chance to become a female.
  • Sometimes, after a battle when the lawn is full, you can still hear the plants making sounds.

Earlier gameplay

As seen in earlier screenshots of the game, Snow Pea was going to cost 200 sun, Tangle Kelp was going to be a ground plant, and plants were given via conveyor style, but the player still needed sun to plant them. Possibly, players were going to select the rating of getting plants on the conveyor belt.

Also, in October 2007, when the name was «Lawn of the Dead», the progress bar was shorter, the Sunflower costed 100 sun, the sun counter was near the right side of the screen, the lawn was zoomed in more, the lawnmowers were closer to the grass, and Potato Mine cost 50 sun instead of 25 sun and was bigger, as wide as a grass tile. Like the Snow Pea, Chomper originally costed 200 sun, and in an ice world (most likely Ice Level), the Wall-nut was seen costing 75 sun.

Old backyard design. There is no pool, but rather higher ground (not a fence) that blocks projectiles.

A VERY old Catapult-like plant. Ripped from Iceberg Lettuce files.
