Tips[]
- When sprinting accessories are equipped, the burst of speed provided by a hook upon latching a surface can be used to accelerate a player to sprinting speed instantly. This can also be done with the Unicorn and Basilisk Mount’s charging abilities, though requiring an additional input to reactive the mount, and Anti-Gravity Hook, but it will boost the player in the opposite direction.
- The Ice Rod can provide blocks to grapple while flying with wings, repeatedly resetting flight time in midair.
- Characters that have hooked to a block are immune to gravity and knockback. Grappling the ground in dangerous locations, such as near lava
Players can also exploit immunity to gravity by shooting the hook to the ground to prevent fall damage.
, can ensure one does not fall in when taking damage from an enemy.
- Simultaneous-latch multi-hooks are more useful for intricate maneuvers. When fast travel is preferred, individually-latching multi-hooks allow faster transit, since they immediately sling the player across gaps, rather than automatically suspending them midway.
- Hooks that can be fired in rapid succession (Dual Hook, Web Slinger, Fish Hook, etc.) provide greater security when falling. If the first hook fails to latch onto a surface, the other hooks will provide additional chances to avoid fall damage.
- If a player grapples onto a door and opens it while suspended, the player will fly through it with immense speed (up to 50 mph if performed in quick succession), provided they’re in a position to fit through the door. The same effect can be achieved with Actuators. When there are Frozen Slime Blocks on the other side of the door, this speed will be kept and can be used for very rapid transportation in a skybridge, etc.
- This effect does not apply to the Static Hook or Anti-Gravity Hook, which do not pull players in.
- On the Console version, Old-gen console version, and Mobile version, doors are opened automatically when the player gets near one, so this is easier to perform.
- Smart Doors, an option added in Desktop version’s 1.4.0.1 for doors to open automatically when the player is going through them, makes this method far more convenient, as the player only needs to hold left or right in order to open it.
- While latched with the Anti-Gravity Hook and rotating around the latch point, mana and health will regenerate as if the player was standing still. It also provides a simple way to dodge quickly even when under the effects of reduced movement speed (such as from the Vortex Armor’s special ability).
- The Anti-Gravity Hook is very effective in avoiding quick enemies like Mothron, provided there is enough space.
- Smooth walls can be climbed extremely quickly with the Anti-Gravity Hook by pressing the Grapple key quickly and holding the ▲ Up key while the mouse is in the top and slightly to the right of the middle of the screen.
- Right-clicking a hook in the inventory will automatically equip it to the hook slot.
Tips/Useful Pointers
- When first unlocked, try to avoid spamming/overusing the Grappling Hook — Completely depleting the meter means having to wait to use it again.
- Ledges of buildings, rooftops, higher pathways and fences/the top of most walls make complimentary use of the Hook.
- Whilst climbable sides to buildings i.e. window frames can be grappled to, it is often better to grapple up to the highest part or ledge possible.
- Note that some building walls won’t always allow Crane to properly grab onto them, so you might have to grapple again if Crane starts falling.
- The Hook can be used to grapple from a rooftop down to the ground without sustaining damage at all. This is very useful for when needing to get to ground or lower rooftop levels in Old Town.
- Even when reaching Survivor Rank 25 where most players will be liberal in their use of the Hook, try to only use it for when you need to.
- Make use of the Hook for enemies right near the edge of rooftops or high ledges — The Hook may not do much damage but the fall damage that many enemies will sustain often kills them instantly.
Variants
In Slash’EM Extended, the grappling hook is part of the levitator race’s starting inventory. Since the levitator is permanently levitating and therefore unable to pick up items normally, the grappling hook is an important tool that the player will probably have to use in order to get items. For the levitator specifically, hooking oneself cannot happen, making it much safer to use the hook. However, the levitator race doesn’t automatically get the flail skill; it’s a good idea to combine it with a role that has it, and try to reach Expert to greatly reduce the amount of tries it takes to snatch an item.

The Grapple Gun is a gadget used exclusively by Specialist Webster Mackay. It allows him to quickly ascend various structures, or move quickly over shallow terrain.
The Grapple Gun has unlimited ammunition, limited by a modest cooldown. It can attach to most map elements (perhaps short of foliage). It can also inflict 50 damage against enemy infantry and Ranger drones, at risk of being reeled in with a miss. The hook can even penetrate helicopter canopies to injure occupants
Trivia
Battlefield 2
- The player can pick up the grappling hook while other players are using it to climb. While useful when an enemy is using it, one should be careful not to pick up friendly hooks.
- As with the crossbow zipline, players cannot kill anyone with a grappling hook. Slinging it directly at someone does no damage whatsoever. Removing a line while someone is climbing that results in a fatal fall does not count as a kill, granting the killed player a suicide instead.
Battlefield Hardline
The model of grappling hook line launcher used most closely resembles the ResQmax ALM. Modifications include an altered barrel housing, external gas canister, and special reflex sight.
Battlefield 2042
Mackay can grapple towards some unusual targets, such as the OV-P Recon Drone, flying C5 Explosives, smoke from gadgets, and sometimes the central column of a tornado.

Notes[]
The glow provided by certain Hooks: Dual Hook blue end (top), Dual Hook red end (middle), and Christmas Hook (bottom). No light sources other than the Hooks are present in this shot.
As shown in this image, each hook on the Lunar Hook shines its respective color. Solar (top) shines orange/red, Nebula (right) shines purple, Vortex (bottom) shines teal, and Stardust (left) shines blue.
The Anti-Gravity Hook is unlike any other hook allowing the user to rotate around the grappling point.
The Static Hook in action, keeping the user in place when grappling to a new location and allowing the user to move back and forth at will.
Using a hook to instantly accelerate to sprinting speed.
The Hook of Dissonance in action, teleporting the player.
- The Squirrel Hook will sometimes automatically dislodge when grappled to Palm Trees.
- Prior to 1.4, Grappling a platform or rail with only one hook would pull the player inside the platform, meaning that the player would always hit that platform with subsequent grapples. The player would have to jump to dislodge the hook if this happens.
- Hooks reset a character’s flight time when Rocket Boots or wings are equipped as soon as the hook latches on something. This also applies to items that allow more jumps midair, like the Cloud in a Bottle or Cloud in a Balloon.
- All hooks can remain attached to a surface continuously for 10 minutes (10 hours in-game time) before they automatically disengage.
- Players can remove hooks from their inventory while clinging to a surface and remain there until they jump, use another hook, or automatically disengage, even though the hook is no longer in their inventory.
- When used via the , multi-hooks can be re-fired more rapidly, requiring only that the previous chain has fully extended first.
- There is a short in-game tutorial when the Grappling Hook is first obtained.
- Attempting to use a hook on a slope will often cause the player to grapple the block they are standing on, as they are technically inside the block.
- Using a hook will cancel a mount buff. The mount will not appear again unless the player starts the buff again.
- The player cannot use the Hook of Dissonance to teleport through holes that the player is not normally able to fit through.
- Canceling a grappled hook with the ↷ Jump key will result in a jump with half duration, unless currently moving or holding the ▼ Down key in which case no jump happens.

Overview
The grappling hook is unlocked at survivor level 12 and can be used to quickly travel large distances. Using the grappling hook initially depletes a significant amount of its meter, which recharges over time.
There is no hard/full cooldown period unless the player fully exhausts the meter, which will result in the hook being unusable for a few seconds until Crane winds the hook up fully. The meter and recharge rate of the hook are increased once the player reaches survivor level 25 and thus enables Crane to use the hook more frequently and be less conservative with the hook’s meter.
This skill is particularly helpful in speeding up the player’s time in getting from one area of a map to a desired location. It is also useful for escaping hordes of undead, especially from the more agile and aggressive infected such as Virals/Night Walkers and Volatiles that have the ability to climb structures and keep up with Crane when giving chase. As a result this really helps the player to almost easily escape pursuits at night plus when coupled with near-flawless parkour skills and navigation can mean a rapid coverage across an area in such a short time.
The Hook is also helpful for the player when they need to chase enemies i.e. catching up with Bolters and Night Hunters, can help close the gap between the player and a Toad, and can help the player to catch up with Rais’ men who are running away. Without the Grappling Hook, evading pursuers like Volatiles as well as chasing after targets/prey such as Bolters is far more difficult and time-consuming.
The grappling hook can also be used as a weapon to shoot at enemies, however, it is quite weak in that regard not doing much damage at all albeit it is very likely to cause critical/fatal damage to weaker enemies such as Toads and Screamers.
For the player to use the hook it must be equipped in one of the equipment slots as well as be an active equipment item. It is worth noting that with how fragile Bombers are, the Grappling Hook will cause them to explode on contact/as soon as the Hook hits them.

Trivia[]
- It was once going to be possible to grapple to trees. However, this feature was later scrapped, because Redigit found that it «interfered with gameplay in an annoying way». This feature has since been added as the Squirrel Hook’s unique feature.
- The Fish Hook is a play on words, using the term for the real-life fishing tool for a grappling hook with the same appearance.
- The tooltip for the Grappling Hook, «Get over here!», is a reference to Scorpion’s catchphrase in the fighting video game series Mortal Kombat
However, none of the hooks can grab entities and pull them forward in any way.
.
- The tooltip for the Lunar Hook «You want the moon? Just grapple it and pull it down!» is a possible reference to the quote «You want the moon? Just say the word and I’ll throw a lasso around it and pull it down.» by George Bailey, protagonist of the 1946 American Christmas fantasy drama movie It’s a Wonderful Life.
- The Bat Hook is most likely a reference to DC Comics’ fictional superhero Batman, who uses a grappling hook which reels in very quickly, usually launching him up onto ledges.
- The Web Slinger is most likely a reference to Marvel Comics’ fictional superhero Spider-Man, who is often referred to as the «Web Slinger» due to his ability to sling webs and attach them in order to enhance movement.
- When using the Lunar Hook, the color fired always follows this order: First orange (Solar), second green (Vortex), third pink (Nebula), and finally blue (Stardust).
- The Candy Cane Hook can be sold at a price comparable to the Hardmode hooks, despite it only being a pre-Hardmode hook. It is also one of the few items with the rarity that can be obtained pre-Hardmode.
- The Thorn Hook resembles a miniature version of Plantera’s Hooks.
- If a player switches hooks while already hooked, the existing hook will keep the previous hook’s sprite. However, re-shooting the hook will update the sprite.
- When switching hooks from an older hook that has more ends to a newer hook with less ends, the new hook will initially replace the first hook shot out, but then will subsequently always replace the older hook. This is very unstable and can allow strange effects such as two static hooks latched at the same time. It can also cause the player to have both Anti-Gravity hooks and static hooks at the same time and doing so can be very janky.
- The Static Hook has a rarity of despite being acquirable after only one of the mechanical bosses has been defeated. It is also the only item with this rarity that can be purchased.
- Considering that the Thorn Hook has the same stats as the three Biome Mimic hooks, the Illuminant, Tendon and Worm Hooks, it is possible that the Thorn Hook may have originally been intended as a drop from the Jungle Mimic, which never made it into the game.
- The tooltip for the Squirrel Hook «In the tree, part of the tree.» is a possible reference to the Adventure Time episode «Up A Tree» in which Finn climbs a tree to get a frisbee and meets a squirrel who says the line.
- The ivy whip is the only grappling hook referred to as a whip. This is odd because as of 1.4 Whips were added as a weapon class.
Tips
- Don’t try to use this as a lethal weapon. Treat this as a ranged Karambit.
- You are not immune to fall damage while using this. As insurance, you can bring the Cakepack or Jetpack to prevent fall damage.
- The Duck Mount can also be used, though you need to quickly unlatch the Grappling Hook and deploy your mount.
- Same thing also works with the Parasol, but you still have to pull it out before you hit the ground.
- Remember that you are not invincible while using this. It also has a short delay before actually retracting, so use this when you know that you won’t be hit by any zombies, or the situation demands it.
- Keep in mind that taking damage while using the Grappling Hook will make the grappling line disappear.
- Keep in mind that this weapon has a firing arc, so aim above where you’re planning to hit.
- You can use the Grappling Hook to climb high buildings in maps like Peach N’ Spills Resort, New Bloxcoast II and Tokyo, Japan
While this can be used to travel over mild or flat terrain, it isn’t recommended, as sprinting is a faster alternative.
.
- You can use this with the Karambit
However, you can only use this via the Double Equip system, and you will be left without a ranged weapon. This method is only useful in Quest and possibly Rapid Infection, so long you are fine with being defenceless.
to latch onto a wall, then climb it.
- This has very limited ammunition and you need to reload every time you want to latch onto something.
- If you want to quickly abandon the retracting process, simply jump or select another weapon/item.
- The Grappling Hook
However, for moving objects, the latch will not move as the object moves, leaving the latch in mid-air.
can latch onto non-collidable and moving objects.
- If you reach an area with no Ammo Stations, and you have run out of ammunition for the Grappling Hook, simply buy an Extra Ammo box in the In-Game Store.
- The Flakvest is recommended alongside this weapon, as it will grant you three extra hooks.
