In addition to Heinlein’s political views, Starship Troopers popularized a number of military concepts and innovations, some of which have inspired real life research. The novel’s most noted innovation is the powered armor exoskeletons used by the Mobile Infantry. These suits were controlled by the wearer’s own movements, but powerfully augmented a soldier’s strength, speed, weight carrying capacity (which allowed much heavier personal armament), jumping ability (including jet and rocket boost assistance), and provided the wearer with improved senses (infrared vision and night vision, radar, and amplified hearing), a completely self-contained personal environment, sophisticated communications equipment, and tactical map displays. Their powered armor made the Mobile Infantry a hybrid between an infantry unit and an armored one.

Whether directly inspired by Starship Troopers or not, the United States military has attempted to develop «real world» technology that would give the abilities of the MI’s powered armor to its soldiers.Template:Dead link Equipment which replicates many of the individual abilities of powered armor (night vision goggles, infrared goggles, and Global Positioning System locators) are now standard issue military equipment. Between 1996 and 2007, the U.S. Army conducted its Land Warrior research program, which would have given many of the MIs integrated communications and tactical intelligence abilities to United States infantrymen. However, the program funding was eliminated in the army’s 2008 budget. The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency of the United States Department of Defense has also spent some $50 million in an attempt to develop a powered exoskeleton in its Exoskeletons for Human Performance Augmentation program, although apparently without any significant breakthroughs or the release of battlefield versions of its prototypes.

Another concept the book pioneered was that of «space-borne infantry». The heavily mechanized units of M.I. troops were attached to interstellar troop transport spacecraft, which then delivered them to planetary target zones, by dropping groups of Mobile Infantrymen onto the planet surface from orbit via individual re-entry capsules (hence the book’s slang term «cap troopers» for M.I. troops). The uses for such a force—ranging from smash-and-burn raids, to surgical strikes, conventional infantry warfare, and holding beachheads—and the tactics that might be employed by such soldiers are described extensively within the novel. The weapons, tactics, training, and many other aspects of this futuristic elite force are carefully detailed: everything from the function of the armored suits themselves, to the need for multiple variants of powered armor, to the training of personnel in both suit operations and the specialized unit tactics that would be needed, to the operational use of the suits in combat.

«Правда о Девятой Роте»

Отечественный шутер от первого лица в особом «документальном» жанре. Он является интерактивной реконструкцией исторического боя, происходившего в ночь с 7 на 8 января 1988 года в южном Афганистане между бойцами девятой роты 345-го гвардейского десантного полка и отрядами моджахедов.

В ходе специального расследования, проведённого Дмитрием Пучковым (также известным под псевдонимом Гоблин), стали известны детали военной операции «Магистраль» и реальные обстоятельства боя на высоте 3234. Пронзительный шум автоматов, литры крови, отчаянные вопли товарищей — всё это будет нещадно преследовать игрока вплоть до самого финала кампании.

The weapon performs even worse in practice due to the MI’s poor tactics. While they were trained well enough to fight humans, the soldiers were completely unprepared against the Arachnids’ wave rushes and thus were forced to respond by forming their own — much less effective considering how heavily outnumbered they were.

That said, vague orders ranging from «kill anything with more than two legs» to «find a Bug hole, and nuke it» saw the unfortunate troops running up to a much larger group of Warriors, firing wildly, then running away as they were ripped to shreds. Likewise, defeating larger Bugs required insane daredevil stunts like throwing a grenade into a Tanker’s mouth or climbing onto its back. The MI also gave no concern to ammunition conservation (even shooting corpses at times) despite carrying very little ammunition and no reliable backup weapons aside from the much-neglected underslung shotgun. The shotgun is used on only two occasions despite its ability to take down a Warrior with a single shot, while the rifle itself can take at least half a magazine (at least the way it used). Unfortunately during the landing, many of the MI troops forgot to aim for the nerve stems of the Warriors, giving the bugs more time to advance on the MI squads.

Finally, the MI receive no support apart from their nukes and the occasional airstrike, which can be as dangerous to them as to the Bugs. Given the fact that most of the planets in the Klendathu system were extremely rocky, effective use of tanks and other armored vehicles would be limited.

As of Starship Troopers 3: Marauder, set 6 years in the future, MI tactics seem to have improved, along with the new TAS. The MI have adopted the Firing By Rank technique heavily used by 19th century rifle men. This tactic is known to be very effective in holding defensive lines against «wave» style attacks. The first rank fires until ammunition is depleted, then the second rank moves forward and opens fire, the first rank reloads and then moves forward and the cycle continues literally creating a endless wall of fire. This allows MI to actually drive back waves of warriors.

Roughnecks: Starship Troopers Chronicles[]

The Arachnids are an alien species that has conquered and colonized many planets across the galaxy. The Arachnids are first discovered on Pluto which led to a large battle against SICON forces. After The Pluto Campaign it was discovered that the Arachnids were actually an interstellar race covering much of the galaxy. It is also known that they will not stop their war against the humans until they are all destroyed.

Необычный вариант десанта представила нам игра Halo 3, а точнее ее самостоятельное дополнение Orbital Drop Shock Trooper. Здесь вы исполните роль орбитального десантника, причем не суперсолдата, а обычного человека. Геймплей не сильно отличается от оригинала – бегаем, воюем, изучаем локации и наслаждаемся отличной историей, которая заполняет пробел между второй и третьей частями.

ODST заслужила похвалу за сценарий, мрачную атмосферу и тот факт, что играть за рядового солдата куда труднее, чем за супербойца, и этот контраст очень чувствуется на фоне серии. Радует и то, что сыграть в это дополнение с сентября 2020 года можно на ПК (входит в состав The Master Chief Collection).

Sequels[]

The film was followed by the CGI animated television series Roughnecks: Starship Troopers Chronicles, which is not related to the movie, in 1999, along with a direct-to-video sequel Starship Troopers 2: Hero of the Federation in 2004. The sequel was not as popular as the first, mostly due to its low budget and the fact it was more in the horror genre than the gung-ho (and arguably silly) action of the original. The satire was also dropped. In 2008 a second sequel Starship Troopers 3: Marauder was released. The sequel performed much better than than the first sequel. Marauder returned to the gun-ho action and humor similar to the first film, however its satire was much more pointed than the first’s.

• «Cunningham» is a Scottish surname, while «Guy» is from Old French Gui.
• Ratzass uses a Morita Mk III SAW instead of a normal assault rifle that used by other trooper. After the troopers decide to take out the Queen Bug, he switched to use a twin-barreled Gatling gun.
• He seems to often hang around with Bugspray.
• It is unknown whether he has a crush on Ice Blonde or not as he tends to talk to her much often.
• He seems well versed in ballet.
• He is the first recurring character other than Big Three: Johnny Rico, Carmen Ibanez, and Carl Jenkins.
• He was the last K-12 trooper to be killed. However, unlike his deceased comrades, he died from a power suit rupture that literally froze him to death.

Первый «Звёздный десант» повествует о начале войны между двумя известными формами жизни в галактике Млечный Путь — человечеством и арахнидами. Параллельным путём в том же фильме идёт история жизни нескольких друзей, выпускников одной школы, в условиях милитаристского общества и разгорающегося военного конфликта. Государственная машина пропаганды диктует свои условия, где только после прохождения службы в армии человек может считаться гражданином. Поэтому наши герои идут под присягу:

• Карл — самый умный в классе, поступает на службу в т. н. «пси-корпус», орган разведки будущего;
• Кармен Ибанез — первая красавица класса, исполняет свою мечту и становится пилотом корабля;
• Джон Рико — альфа-самец класса, испытывая взаимные чувства к Кармен, тоже идёт на службу, несмотря на протесты родителей, но попадает в десантные войска;
• Диззи Флорес — харизматичная и боевая девушка, капитан школьной футбольной команды. Будучи влюблённой в Рико (не взаимно), специально напрашивается в тот же десантный взвод, где служит Джон.

В один прекрасный день с планеты Клендату (англ. Klendathu, Big K) на землю прилетает метеорит и внезапно падает на Буэнос-Айрес — родину главных героев. Наблюдательному зрителю, кстати, понятно, что эту агрессию (если это вообще была агрессия, а не удачно использованная в пропагандистских целях природная случайность) можно считать и ответной — судя по пропагандистским передачам землян, они давно ведут экспансию на территорию клендатцев, официальная точка зрения гласит, что последние — не обладающие сознанием животные, с правами которых не стоит считаться, все факты, не укладывающиеся в эту версию, официальной пропагандой высмеиваются или игнорируются. После такого инцидента правительство Конфедерации (единственного государства на Земле) принимает решение уничтожить Арахнидов мощной наступательной операцией, которая, к сожалению, проваливается. Печальный итог — более ста тысяч погибших за один час операции. Меняется правительство и меняется доктрина ведения войны — изучение жуков и их разума. Рико остался жив, но Кармен узнаёт из списка раненых и погибших, что он мёртв. Остатки отряда Рико переводятся в легендарный отряд «Головорезов». Их командир — лейтенант Расчак, школьный учитель Рико.

Под его командованием Джон выполняет несколько удачных операций, таких, как уничтожение огромного жука-танкера, за что и получает повышение. А после неудачной операции по спасению отряда заставы Виски на планете Пи, Рико становится командиром «Головорезов» из-за смерти лейтенанта Расчака. Там же погибает и Диззи, которая перед смертью успевает признаться Джону в любви.

В эпической финальной битве благодаря слаженным действиям войск Конфедерации удаётся поймать руководителя арахнидов — это жук-мозг. Друзья, встретившись на планете, обещают оставаться друзьями навеки и радуются первой значительной победе в этой войне.

Фильм оставляет поистине убойное впечатление — часть сознания зрителя самозабвенно радуется победе наших славных ребят, другая же часть в панике пытается сообразить, как же так вышло, что нападения жуков способствуют укреплению существующего строя… и что же пытался сказать в начале фильма учитель Расчак, пока выпускники флиртовали и строили планы будущей карьеры? А отойдя к холодильнику, зритель начинает осознавать, что перед ним была злая и едкая сатира на фильмы о том, что война — это круто.

Starship Troopers novel

Powered armors have jump jets installed into them to allow troopers to jump over obstacles and buildings with ease. According to Juan Rico, when one is suited up in the powered armor, they appear like a «steel gorilla».

A trooper’s vital status can be read by pressing a button on the suit.

There are three different types of Powered Armor:

Marauder Suit

The Marauder Suit is the basic Powered Armor used by the Mobile Infantry. Each armored suit is customized to fit each individual. The Armor is designed to give a trooper many times more strength, to let them jump over buildings with ease, and to deflect enemy fire.

Scout Suit

The Scout Suit is a lightly armored variant of Powered Armor which is able to jump and travel faster than regular Powered Armor, for use in recon missions.

Command Suit

The Command Suit is a more powerful variant of Powered Armor, meant to be used by officers. The main difference in Command Armor to that of Marauder Armor is that Command Armor has much more communications equipment, and controls much more jump power and «juice» than the Marauder Armor.

The Commander and Soldier suits

In the Starship Troopers anime, there are three types of Powered Suits (パワードスーツ Pawādo Sūtsu, aka «P.S.«) just like the novel version: Infantry Suit (歩兵タイプ Hohei Taipu), Commander Suit (指揮官タイプ Shikikan Taipu), and Area Support Suit (エリア支援タイプ Eria Shien Taipu). However, the Area Support Suit doesn’t appear in the show, but only in concept arts. The Suits appearances in the anime are based on the illustration for the Japanese version of Starship Troopers novel. The Powered Suits is also known as «Enhanced Combat Suit» (強化戦闘服 Kyōka Sentōfuku).

Each soldier uses a trace system sensor to control the Powered Suit via the underwear’s laser optical connectors, which give feedback to both the human body and the Powered Suit. Much like the novel version, the Powered Suit has a HUD and face plate system, controlled via the chin.

The Powered Suit in the anime has a variety of machine guns as primary armaments, while the Y-Rack on the back of the armor is on the left shoulder instead. Also, the hatch opens from front instead of back.

Also, the energy issue doesn’t seem to be a problem as seen in the novel.

The Soldier Suits can carried various optional equipment, such as the Missile Launcher, the Y-Rack, and the flamethrower. In addition, the Soldier Suits have three extra variations:

• P.S.Variation, Type-1: Flame and LASER unit equipment
• P.S.Variation, Type-2: High gravity planet method «DEEP DIVER»
• P.S.Variation, Type-3: VOLCANO-RIFLE-SYSTEM loading type

Starship Troopers: Dominant Species

During a battle on Klendathu, a newly developed Power Armor was put into action for the first time. One Power Armor suit worn by Thomas Trask was launched via capsule unto the planet surface where it engaged Arachnid forces before rescuing captured Mobile Infantry troopers with the help of a Neodog and killing a Brain Bug. The deployed armor was then returned to it’s ship in orbit.[Issue needed]

The Mobile Infantry troopers wear the M-1A4 Power Suits and the M-1C8 command variants, while the Skinnies have their own Powered Armors.

• According to the official blog, the story of Starship Troopers: Invasion was originally set to take place almost 10 years after the first movie. Since the event from Starship Troopers 3: Marauder takes place 11 years after the fist film, Invasion and Marauder became two parallel universe. However, it was later stated that this film takes place several years after the Marauder on the official blog.

  Johnny Rico is now a general. His promotion was mentioned in the last part of Starship Troopers 3: Marauder.

• Johnny Rico, Carmen Ibanez, and Carl Jenkins once again appear in a film together.
• What happened in the Fort Casey is the story arc of mobile game Starship Troopers: Invasion «Mobile Infantry».
• Carl mind-controls the Federal Intelligence Bugs, much like how he did to his pet, Cyrano, in the first film.
• The Bug use a human corpse by stabbing into it to communicate with human. This is first seen in Starship Troopers 3: Marauder.
• Rico, Carmen and Carl have different facial appearances, apparently not base on their original actors.
• «Friends forever» from the first film is mentioned again in this film.
• In Starship Troopers: Invasion character bio, it is stated that Rico still has a «thing» for Carmen after he already lost his romantic orientation to Dizzy Flores on Tango Urilla years ago.
• Sergeant Zim is mentioned by General Rico. Zim is possibly retired from the military and opened a bar or restaurant.
• Zander Barcalow is mentioned by Carmen Ibanez as «a certain young trooper».
• The Invasion of Planet P and the destruction of the Rodger Young are mentioned.
