The game received mostly positive feedback from users and critics, despite the use of in-app purchases. Critics mostly praised the gameplay and graphics. It has a Metacritic score of 86/100 based on 36 reviews. PopCap Games announced at Gamescom on August 20, 2013, that the game had been downloaded 15 million times, making it the most successful EA mobile game launch.

Ten days later it was announced that the game had been downloaded 25 million times, exceeding the lifetime downloads of the first game. Apple chose Plants vs. Zombies 2 as a runner-up for 2013 iPhone game of the year. However, many people complain about the several microtransactions the game has, as well as having strange difficulty spikes throughout the adventure mode.

Strategies

With

The Imp is a glass cannon in every sense of the phrase- he does a lot of damage, but he can’t take damage very well. As the Imp, make sure you keep moving and jumping whilst shooting. The Imp’s low health makes it very easy for plants to vanquish you. A good way to get Vanquishes is to ambush your target from behind and avoid fighting large groups of plants. If you accidentally start a skirmish with a group of plants, use Impkata while trying to find an escape.

As an Imp, Citrons will always be your worst nightmare. Citron has many abilities that can render Imp’s abilities useless. If you want to fight a Citron, take caution of Spin Dash, as it can vanquish you if you have less than 50 health. Double jump as the Citron is going to smash into you. Alternatively, Gravity Grenade them if they are in Ball Form, as they are unable to fight back,

Use Gravity Grenade if you want to set up a group of large plants into one bunch. The best time to execute a Gravity Grenade is near other zombies, as they will be able to help defeat the captured plants. Some classes like Foot Soldier or Super Brainz can easily use some of their abilities to quickly Vanquish the plants in this state. Gravity Grenade can also be used defensively to stop a plant from chasing you, but only use this strategy when in grave danger. Chompers (with the exception of the Yeti Chomper) are helpless when caught by a Gravity Grenade as long as you stay out of their bite range.

While the Imp can deal a lot of damage very quickly, the Imp suffers from great recoil. When firing your primary weapon, your shots will quickly raise in elevation. This makes it much harder to hit plants, especially since with no control, the Imp’s shots are extremely inaccurate. Learning to control the Imp’s recoil is crucial for Imps to deal damage efficiently.

Also, When you eject your mech if your gravity grenade is charged use it on your mech if plants are near.

Against

The Imp is for certain a deadly character, but he’s far from unbeatable, especially without his Z-Mech. Characters such as the Peashooter are effective against the Imp because of his splash damage, making hits on an Imp easier to land.
Cacti may have a harder time hitting the Imp as he is among the smallest characters in the game, but most of their shots should be enough to take a good chunk off his health as long as his mech isn’t in play.

Ideally, using crowd-control abilities such as EMPeach or Time Snare render the Imps mobility useless, allowing any teammate to land free hits.

Chomper’s Goop is also very effective at immobilizing an Imp. You shouldn’t need to outright eat them unless you’re playing as Disco Chomper, who relies on eating Zombies to activate Disco Fever.

Scrapped and unused abilities

It is confirmed to be a scrapped ability for the Cactus.

Sprint Smash Weapon

An ability for the Torchwood that acts similarly to the All-Star’s Sprint Tackle ability, Torchwood will rush forward and smash his hand on the floor, dealing 75 damage to all zombies within the radius. Confirmed to be scrapped.

Icon for Torchwood’s Sprint Smash

Bling version of the Zombie Heal Station. It has a unique model and effects but has no icon.

Impflier drone

It seems to be a scrapped ability for the Imp. Its primary weapon is a laser and can call in a Cone Strike like Zombot Drone. It had appeared in the E3 trailer for Garden Warfare 2.

Future Nut

Scrapped variant for the Tall-nut Battlement which would have given plants behind it a damage boost. It has an icon and may have been scrapped due to its range being presumably difficult to recognize. In earlier builds of the game, the ability was usable and had a model that could be seen in game.

Buff Bubble

Scrapped early version of Hover-Goat’s Damage Buff Booster Beam. When used, it creates a damage boosting aura around Hover-Goat 3000 that buffs teammates and debuffs enemies.

Auto Turret

Unused alternate Big Bolt Blaster. It’s an AI controlled Big Bolt Blaster that automatically tracks and shoots at plants. This may have been an inspiration for the Heavy Helpers

Cannon Rodeo Exit

A unused ability of Captain Deadbeard it is not known what he did but it could be that when the player is in a chase he uses the ability to throw himself away.

Trivia

  • He is the only base character to have a one-word primary weapon attack.
  • It is a coincidence that him and his zombie arch-nemesis counterpart, All-Star, has the highest health and is the only one without an ammo count on each other’s respective character group (however, this is only the case in Garden Warfare, as some Citron variants and all Super Brainz variants have unlimited ammo.) However, the All-Star and its variants, as well as some of the Chomper’s variants, have an overheating mechanism which prevents them from using their primary weapon extensively.
  • According to Justin Wiebe, there was originally going to be a Bling Chomper variant in Garden Warfare, but it was dropped for being too underpowered.
  • He cannot eat certain zombies and instantly vanquish them, like Coffin Zombies and Outhouse Zombies. Instead, their armor will be broken, but the zombies will stay alive and Chomper will have to take time to eat the armor just like a normal zombie that has just been eaten. Chomper also cannot eat bosses in Garden Ops

However, he can still illogically eat the mini-bosses such as Dino King, Elder King, Garbage King, and Pyre Prince even though they were not meant to be eaten.

    , for obvious reasons.

  • In GW1, him and his variants are the only classes that have the ability to penetrate improvised zombie armor with their primary weapon.
  • Despite the weapon upgrades being called «Chomp’s Upgrades,» they actually upgrade he himself rather than his chomp, this is also true for most of his variants.
  • All of his upgrades are similar to the special abilities of three of his variants (speed upgrade is like Hot Rod Chomper, health upgrade is like Armor Chomper, and digestion speed upgrade is like Chester Chomper)
  • When a Chomper tries to Chomp a player whilst they are turning around, he will Chomp the player from the front. This is obviously intentional as there is a special animation for this happening to each zombie class.
  • He is the only plant to start with its Y or Triangle button ability.
  • All of his variants with melee attacks are all Super Rare, while Chomper’s variants with a spray attack are Rare.
  • When he swallows a zombie, the zombie will remain alive for a split second after being swallowed. This is because once a zombie is swallowed, it will be dealt over ~2000 damage to instantly kill it. If the player looks closely after swallowing a zombie, the damage indicator will show up bearing a number over 2000.
  • He now has the most variants in Garden Warfare 2, having a total of 11 variants.
  • In Garden Warfare 2, when he is vanquished, he frowns more than he does in the first game.
  • He is one of the two classes in Garden Warfare to have a Legendary variant in the sequel, the other being the Scientist.
  • In Garden Warfare 2, every one of his variants now have the health they possess with health upgrades.
  • He has been slightly re-designed in Garden Warfare 2, as his mouth isn’t quite as wide as it was in Garden Warfare, which makes the Chomper look more similar to his appearance in Plants vs. Zombies 2.
  • If a Chomper Goops a zombie player and that zombie is vanquished by an ally, the Chomper can receive 10 coins or 10 exp for a Goop assist.
  • If he is vanquished whilst in the middle of the animation when eating a zombie, the zombie that was being eaten won’t die

Trivia

  • Engineer has a visible butt crack and is one of the four zombies in the whole series to have him showing it (excluding its variants except for the Welder and Landscaper), the other zombies are Barrel Zombie when his barrel breaks, the Gargantuar Zombie, and the DJ Zom-B in Plants vs. Zombies Adventures.
  • He is very similar to the Engineer from Team Fortress 2, as they both can build teleporters, turrets/sentries which can be upgraded three times, wear hard hats and share the same name.
  • Sometimes he says a garbled version of, «I’m gonna eat your brains!» when the player spawns as him.
    • Upon spawning, he also may say other garbled lines including one referring to himself as an Engineer.
  • The Zombot Turret used to be one of the Engineer’s abilities, but was replaced by the Zombot Drone.
  • He makes a laughing noise when he builds a teleporter or building/upgrading a Zombot Turret.
  • He bears a resemblance to Digger Zombies from the original game in structure.
  • When the player builds a Zombot Turret, the name of the turret will be «‘s Zombie», even though it is a turret, this is no longer accurate in GW2.
  • Engineer is the only playable zombie that does not start with his middle ability.
  • Engineer has the least Super Rare character variants, having only two.
  • There is a very rare glitch that only happens in the original Garden Warfare where if a Chomper

This also applies to the other Zombie classes.

swallows an Engineer, the Chomper will not get credit for vanquishing that Engineer. Also, the Engineer will reappear in a spot when the Chomper finishes and will appear near the plant.

  • If the Engineer is using his Jackhammer ability and a Chomper attempts to swallow or Burrow him, the Chomper will only eat the Jackhammer and the Engineer will escape unharmed and gives him a chance to get away from or vanquish the Chomper, as long as he is not Gooped.
  • In the first issue of the Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2 prequel comic book, Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare, Dr. Zomboss repeatedly refers to the Engineer as «Gene Error,» suggesting his name is Gene

An engineer named «Gene Error» also appears in the Top Zombie quests to build various unsuccessful teleporters and a cannon, such as the ones at the bases in the Backyard Battleground.

    .

  • The Engineer is the only character class not to appear on the cover art of Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2

However, the Stinky Goat on the cover art may be the Engineer as a goat after being transformed into one by Rose’s Goatify ability.

    .

  • He no longer has facial hair in Garden Warfare 2, but he has it again in Battle for Neighborville.
  • All of the Engineer’s variants (minus Roadie Z and the Sanitation Expert who is closer to a garbage-man) are based on skilled trades: welding, industrial painting, automotive mechanics, electric wiring, plumbing, landscaping, and air conditioning. One can argue that the Sanitation Expert might be associated with commercial cleaning based on his description.

Trivia

  • The Z-Mech is based on the Titan from Titanfall, another EA

Imp also appears to have a jetpack similar to the one used by the Pilots in Titanfall.

    game.

  • In the E3 announcement trailer, the Imp was seen riding a flying machine and ejecting from it.
  • As mentioned in records from E3, Citron is his counter in the same way that the Engineer is the Chomper’s counter.
  • By pre-ordering the game players get the Z7-Mech by Grass Effect, a spoof of Mass Effect. It is to be an alternate variant of the Z-Mech.
  • Unlike the Imp in the Plants vs. Zombies series, who wear red unbuttoned shirts and blue shorts, he wears an orange jumpsuit and shorts while donning a yellow helmet.
  • In the E3 trailer, the Imp had 75 health points, although he actually has 50 health afterwards.
  • Imp is the only new zombie class that doesn’t have a different primary weapon when the aim button is being pressed.
  • According to the Garden Warfare 2 prequel comic series, the Z-Mech is capable of translating an Imp’s thoughts.
  • The Imp’s laugh is very similar to the Defender Bot/Zombie Turret.
  • When Imp is vanquished, he still holds the blasters in his hands, unlike all other zombie classes who lose their weapons when vanquished (excluding Super Brainz, who uses his fists as his weapons).
  • In one of the original images for the Imps shown at the E3, the Imp only appears to have one blaster, which looks quite different from the ones that he now has.
  • The Imp is the only class whose abilities change between variants, aside from the Unicorn and Twilight Chompers.

Strategies

General

In general, the Foot Soldier is a class that is very easy to play, yet somewhat difficult to master. He has three very useful abilities — a way to provide cover to his fellow zombies as well as deny areas to the plants (Zombie Stink Cloud), a way to get to elevated positions and attack enemies from above (Rocket Jump), and a hard-hitting removal ability (ZPG). All of these abilities make Foot Soldier a great team player, and possibly even a game changer when used well.

The Foot Soldier also makes for a good pseudo — sniper, as the Z-1 Assault Blaster has an accurate crosshair. He also deals good damage at long range. Furthermore, his ZPG can instantly take out an unaware plant, and his Zombie Stink Cloud, when aiming up and jumping, goes a decent distance so it can be used to cover objectives when the Soldier is far away. He can also use it to flank himself since the Stink Cloud obscures vision. However, what makes him a capable sniper is his Rocket Jump. It gives the Soldier the highest boost in height, surpassing the Peashooter’s Hyper. This makes it common for Soldiers to appear on rooftops, so plants should always keep one eye on the sky, or else they will be vanquished quickly.

However, the Foot Soldier has a few flaws to go with his numerous advantages. His primary weapon is somewhat inaccurate up close, and that multiple plants can quickly overwhelm him. His Rocket Jump only gives one height boost, so if the player accidentally slides down, it will be 20 seconds before they can jump back up again. The ZPG, while very powerful, has a lot of startup time, making it not the best choice in close quarters. His Zombie Stink Cloud, while flanking his position, also covers his and his teammates’ vision.

Chompers can also be quite problematic as his Goop and Spikeweeds can render the Foot Soldier’s abilities unaccessible, preventing the Foot Soldier from using Rocket Jump to escape or ZPG to take the Chomper out. Also, when the Foot Soldier is indeed stunned, the Chomper can take advantage of the situation and score an easy vanquish.

Nonetheless, the Foot Soldier’s pros outshine his cons, and he is considered a very good character by a lot of players.

With

The Foot Soldier has a devastating instant kill explosive, the ZPG. This weapon is best used for dispatching of rooted plants, such as Sunflowers or Peashooters using their Sunbeam, Pea Gatling, or even Cacti using their drones. The Zombie Stink Cloud is best used for covering major objectives, making it harder for plants to defend them, as well as escaping a tight situation. Use Rocket Jump to gain vantage points by supporting your teammates while also making yourself a small target. The best use for the Foot Soldier is to provide support by vanquishing rooted plants from afar. In Gardens & Graveyards and Taco Bandits, the Foot Soldier should sometimes use its stink cloud on annoying Spawnable Plants at a distance (such as the Bamboo Shoot and the Scaredy-shroom) as it temporarily disables the Spawnable Plants allowing the zombie team to pass. Be sure to also keep on the lookout for Cactus drones to shoot them down in order to prevent any lethal Corn Strikes from being performed against your team.

Against

The main counters for the Foot Soldier are the Peashooters and Cacti. Peashooters can use Hyper to quickly get to vantage points before the Foot Soldier and has enough offensive potential to hold its own in a one-on-one fight against the Foot Soldier. Cactus can snipe the Foot Soldier at long range, as well as setting up cover against him and attack him with drones or even drop Potato Mines where the Foot Soldier will land when he uses his Rocket Jump.

Development

In August 2012, PopCap announced that they were working on a sequel to their previous game, Plants vs. Zombies, and that it would include «new features, settings, and situations». In a later announcement, the company confirmed that the new game would be released on July 18, 2013.

On June 26, 2013, PopCap announced on their Twitter page that the game would release later than previously announced. On July 9, the game was released in Australia and New Zealand on the iOS App Store and came out worldwide on August 15, 2013. The Android version was released worldwide on October 23, 2013.

Release

The game was first expected to launch on iOS on July 18, 2013. On June 26, it was announced that the game was delayed until later in the summer on the game’s official Twitter account. The game soft launched in Australian and New Zealand App Store’s on July 9, to test server capacity. It launched worldwide on iOS on August 15 and in five days topped the free app charts in 137 countries.

On September 12, PopCap Games soft launched the game for Android in China in Baidu AppSearch and announced that it would be coming to Google Play worldwide later in the year. On October 2, the game soft launched on the Australian and New Zealand Google Play stores.

Larger Maps

Originally some maps were larger in scale compared to the final version. The three known maps that were larger in concept art are Driftwood Shores, Cactus Canyon and Zomboss Estate. Driftwood Shores originally had 8 objectives, those being: Zomboss Lair, Suburbs, Marina, Docks, Beach, Market, Pirate Museum and the Lighthouse. It had another version which had some differences, that version had: Zomboss Lair, Suburbs, Marina, Docks, Beach, Heritage, Pirate Ship and the Lighthouse. The original version of the final objective had a longer version of the flying part which had the zombies dodge coastal rock formations and go through rings, in the end it was removed to improve the pacing and balance of the objective. Originally the final objective also had the Mega Flower fire a laser at the zombies while the zombies used a laser on-top of a shipwrecked ship to fire back, this was in the end removed due to feeling like the odds were stacked too high for the zombies and was in the end most likely replaced with the Flax Cannons. Cactus Canyon originally had 7 objectives, consisting of: Cemetery, Trailer Park, Motel, Suburbs, Golf Course, Resort and an Airport. In the final game the map was shortened to 5 objectives with the Golf Course being the final one. Originally Zomboss Estate was connected to Suburban Flats as a single map, in the end it was possibly split up into the two maps for being too big for a non Gardens & Graveyards map.

Strategies

With

Playing as the Scientist takes a bit of practice. You need to know when to retreat, when to heal yourself and your team, and when to attack. A good loadout for offensive scientist use is the Warp ability, the Armored Heal Station, and the Sticky Explody Ball. Try to keep an eye out for any flanks you can in the plants defenses. Doing so can catch the enemy off guard, disrupting whatever it is they were doing.  Also try to have two Warps available on you before you try to attack. Use the first warp to get close to your target, and the second warp to flee if you need to. Heal. Repeat. Also be sure to heal any teammates you can. Useful healing abilities for the Scientist include the Mega Heal Bomb and the Zombie Heal Station.

Against

One of the key factors when engaging a Scientist is the range you engage them. Depending on the type of Scientist, be it an Astronaut or a Chemist, you will want to be either a long or medium distance from him. Since the Scientist and his variants achieve maximum damage at close range, you want to keep a good distance when engaging. Try not to let the Scientist get too close to you, as that is when he becomes a real threat.

Effective counters to the Scientist include the Cactus, the Citron, the Torchwood, the Peashooter and the Chomper.

Team Vanquish

In this mode, Scientists are vital to the team’s success, as they revive much faster than other zombies. Reviving a zombie subtracts a point from the other team, so because of this, the Scientist should try reviving every vanquished zombie he sees. The Scientist should try sticking their Sticky Explody balls onto zombies that get close to plants, like the All-Star. If the Scientist is in a combat situation, he should warp closer to the offending plant in order to get more damage. Scientists are easy prey for the Peashooter, as they move very quickly, and are hard to hit. Cacti are dangerous at long range but the Goo Blaster makes short work of them at close or mid range. This class is useful against Chomper, as Chompers need to get close to deal damage, the Scientist Zombie deals more damage than Chomper at close range, so they should take advantage of getting Gooped, and shoot down the carnivorous plant when they get close.

Gardens & Graveyards

The Scientist has two possible roles in this mode: being the zombie team’s Medic or a fast-moving close-range attacker. The Scientist’s high damage at close range makes it a good class for assaulting the garden since the plants have to stand within the garden’s capture zone to block the capture, which forces them to come close to you, allowing you to gun them down. Keep track of your teammates’ health and deploy Zombie Heal Stations near groups of injured zombies. If you wish to maximize your healing power, use the Mega Heal Bomb to provide healing more liberally. At longer ranges, the Scientist is highly vulnerable to the Cactus, Stay behind cover and use Warp to avoid the Cactus’ line of sight. Once you enter close range combat with the Cactus though, the Scientist can make short work of it. Peashooters are a little harder to deal with, they can use rooftops like the Foot Soldier to avoid close range combat while attacking you with their superior range and they have Hyper which allows them to, should they be forced into close range combat, avoid your shots while retaliating with their splash damage. Sunflowers are merely a nuisance at long range since their weapons suffer from a noticeable damage fall-off and at close range, their below-average attack power makes them weak at self-defense. It is at mid range where they are dangerous since if they can keep out at an arm’s length distance from themselves, they will be able to deal large amounts of damage to you while your weapon’s damage fall-off will play against you. Forcing plants into cramped corridors and tight spaces allows you to use your high close range power to gun them down almost regardless of their health.

General

  • The ammo count on the bottom right of the screen was black, along with the plant and zombie projectiles being shown.
  • The animations for the playable plants were different.
  • Scaredy-Shroom and Disco Zombie were originally supposed to be playable characters, but the ideas were scrapped. Instead, Scaredy-Shroom became a spawnable plant, while Disco Zombie became a zombie boss.
  • There were different sounds and audios for the plants and zombies, like Peashooter’s voice being high-pitched.
  • The crosshairs for the plants were different.
  • In Garden Ops, there was a «life system». Supposedly, it can be assumed that the plants could instantly revive themselves when vanquished, at the cost of one life.
  • The health icon was a plus instead of a heart.
  • In E3 2013 gameplay, a Zombot appeared in the end and stomped on the Cactus. Afterwards, it never appeared, suggesting that it was originally an unused boss.
  •  You could only plant four Spawnable Plants, those being Peashooter, Gatling Pea, Bonk Choy and Scaredy-Shroom.
  • In Garden Ops, the wave counter was bigger, more darker and had more zombies.
  • Crazy Dave appeared on the top center of the screen. His animations and design were borrowed from the first Plants vs. Zombies, only sped up. However, his audio was borrowed from Plants Vs Zombies 2.
  • When characters used their longer abilities (Sunbeam, Burrow), the abilities were crossed out with an X mark.
  • When a boss appeared, words like «Zomboss Records»(for the Disco Zombie) or «Bring your Imp to Work Day» (for the Gargantuar) would be shown.
  • The death cam was different. It had purple coloring for the words and zoomed in on a plant or zombie.
  • Garden Warfare went under a different logo.

Strategies

Tips & Tricks

  • The Butter Barrage is great at taking out groups of zombies.
  • Husk Hop can be used to attack zombies and also to hop up onto rooftops or tactical areas.
  • Shuck Shot is great for taking out Z-Mechs as they are easy to hit.
  • Kernel Corn has more firepower than the Foot Soldier, making him a good front line assault class (larger ammo pool).
  • Try and throw the Butter Barrage onto objectives.
  • A good tactic for taking out a Z-Mech is to use the Butter Barrage, then Husk Hop over the Z-Mech, then fire your Shuck Shot at it when you land.
  • Kernel Corn is very similar to the Foot Soldier in many ways, so play it similarly.
  • Shuck Shots don’t have to be completely accurate. They give off small splash damage when they hit something.
  • Husk Hop can be used to quickly and easily get in and out of situations.
  • Spamming the jump button immediately after using Husk Hop propels you forward in a straight line until you either stop jumping or lose momentum.

Trivia

  • The names of his abilities are all alliterative.
  • He is called Corn by the character sticker and Sticker Book.
  • The fact that he fires projectiles from his «arms» seems to reference a concept idea from the original Garden Warfare that deceits plants attacking using their arms rather than their mouths and heads.
  • He yells occasionally while firing his primary weapon or using abilities.
  • In the beta, the Cob Busters had 40 ammo instead of the 35 ammo in the finished game.
  • The default Kernel Corn is currently the only character in the game to be buffed in every character balancing update.
  • His Cob Busters visually lose kernels when the ammo from his primary weapon is used.
  • He has the least elemental variants in the entire game, with only having BBQ Corn.
  • According to the stickerbook, he was fighting overseas during the events of Garden Warfare 1.
