FAQ
Can I craft a cape in Minecraft?
Yes. Numerous sites online allow players to create a custom cape and download it for free. One of these sites is Minecraftcapes.net. With the cape editor tool, you can make a cape with any design in a couple of minutes. Follow the instruction below:
1. Click the large red rectangle to choose a color.
2. Left-click anywhere on the cape template to color that area. You can also hold the left click while moving your mouse to color the required area quicker.
3. Right-click to erase the required area.
4. Mix colors and draw patterns as you wish. Once done, click Download.
5. Upload your custom cape to Minecraft.net to apply the skin.
Some mods, such as Optifine for Minecraft Java Edition, also have a cape editor.
Is there a method I can use to get a free cape?
While you can purchase a pre-made caped skin, all methods of obtaining a cape in Minecraft described in previous sections are free. Java Edition players can get a free cape for migrating their Mojang account. Both Java and Bedrock Edition players can create custom cape designs and upload them to Minecraft.net, cost-free. Most mods also don’t require players to pay anything to use them. In other words, a cape in Minecraft isn’t some kind of lavish piece available only for nobles.
Obtaining[]
Minecraft.net cape selection menu
Java Edition
There are various mods such as Optifine that allow players to obtain capes, some even allowing for any custom design to be used. These capes are however not official and only visible to the player using the mod (or in some cases, other users of that mod). Only official capes, that can be seen by everyone, are listed in this article.
The only cape that can be obtained on one’s own, so far, in Java Edition is the migrator cape which comes from migrating a Mojang account to a Microsoft account. The rest cannot be obtained by players through any in-game means and are therefore considerably rarer. Capes cannot be transferred between accounts.
MINECON capes before Minecon Earth 2017 were obtained by attending or buying a ticket to the year’s MINECON. Minecraft events from 2017 and onward are done via a livestream available to everyone and no capes are given out anymore. On May 12, 2020, Mojang disabled all unused MINECON cape links used to obtain the capes of years 2012, 2013, 2015 and 2016. Only a few thousand players around the world have a MINECON cape.
Other, even less common, types of capes have manually been given out by Mojang to select few members of the community throughout the years. Some of the people who have those capes include Mojang staff themselves, volunteers in various programmes as well as individuals whose impact was recognized by Mojang. Only a few hundred players around the world have such a cape.
Bedrock Edition
Unlike Java Edition, in Bedrock Edition, capes are much more common items with some skins from various skin packs having capes integrated to them. One such skin pack that was made available to everyone was the MINECON 2016 skin pack that contains all five Minecon cape designs from Java Edition up to 2016. A cape celebrating Minecon Live 2019 was available in Bedrock Edition to promote the character creator, though it was obtainable by everyone regardless of whether they watched the event or not. The Pan Cape is another cape exclusive to Bedrock Edition that was given to every player.
Players of Bedrock Edition can equip or unequip certain capes for their skin via the Character Creator.
How to get a cape in Minecraft
Here are all of the possible ways to get a cape in Minecraft:
- Attend MINECON or Minecraft Live events.
- Complete the Mojang to Microsoft account migration.
- Use Minecraft mods.
MINECON
MINECON is an annual Minecraft celebration event. People who attend the event have received an exclusive Minecraft cape in the past. However, Minecraft Live 2020 was an online live stream, and participants did not receive a cape. It is not clear if the Minecraft Live 2021 event, which takes place on October 16, 2021, will offer a free cape.
You cannot get any past MINECON capes unless you’re willing to shell out hundreds of dollars for one on eBay or another auction website. If you want to get a MINECON cape, your best bet is to wait for future event announcements and check if they are giving any away.
Mojang to Microsoft Account Migration
Minecraft players previously had the option to sign in using Mojang or Microsoft accounts. Recently, Minecraft has announced they will be migrating all Minecraft and Mojang accounts over to Microsoft for various reasons. As part of the migration, players who complete the process will receive a free cape.
Cape distributions began in the middle of July for users who successfully migrated their Mojang accounts to Microsoft. At this point, anyone who completes the process will automatically receive the Minecraft Migration Cape. You can refer to Mojang’s account migration guide if you need any assistance with the process.
Minecraft mods
It is possible to attain capes by using Minecraft mods. The three routes you can take are donating to OptiFine, using Forge and downloading MinecraftCapes, or installing the Badlion client.
OptiFine
OptiFine is a Minecraft optimization tool used by a large portion of the community. It offers FPS boosts, shader support, HD texture support, the ability to zoom, and many more options to improve the Minecraft experience. OptiFine donators get free capes, but they are only visible to other OptiFine users. The cape is fully customizable and transferable to other usernames.
MinecraftCapes
Minecraft players who use Forge for mods can install MinecraftCapes Mod. The mod allows players to choose from a variety of capes and upload their own through a URL. To use it, download Advanced Cape Mod and ensure Forge is installed. To install MinecraftCapes Mod, press Win+R and type in %appdata%. Search for the .minecraft folder, and then open the mods folder. Place the .jar file inside the mods folder.
You will also need to register an account and upload the cape to the MinecraftCapes website. After registering, the website will need to link your Minecraft account. Launch Minecraft, go to multiplayer, and join the auth.minecraftcapes.net server. Find the verification code and enter it onto the website to confirm your identity.
You can then upload a cape to use in-game. Head to the Gallery tab on the website, and download any cape you like. Upload the cape, and you will then be able to preview it from the website. Press “J” while in-game to open the MinecraftCapes Mod GUI. You can find options to turn capes and ears on or off.
Badlion Client
Minecraft players can also download the Badlion Client and purchase a “cloak” through their shop. It’s an excellent way to show support for the developers of Badlion Client. The capes on Badlion Client will typically sell for between $12 and $15. There are animated capes for sale, and you can often find discount codes to save a bit of money on your purchase.
Those are all the current ways to get a cape in Minecraft Java Edition!

How do you get Minecraft capes?
Migrating accounts:
“After you’ve moved, everything you love about Java will still be there. You’ll still be able to create and use mods and skins (while keeping your existing ones, of course), as well as play with friends on Java servers (regardless of version). You’ll also keep your Minecraft Java username, and new players will still get to choose their Minecraft username. The only difference? You’ll receive a cool reward once you’ve logged in with your Microsoft account: a special cape!”
Downloading mods:
You can get one of the capes in the game, or rather any cape you can imagine, using mods such as the Advanced Capes. However, other players you meet on multiplayer Minecraft servers might not be able to see your cape unless they also have the same mods installed. The only way to get capes that everyone can see is by being given official capes from Mojang.
Purchasing Skin Packs:
In the bedrock edition of Minecraft, several skin packs contain capes. To get a cape in that edition players will have to purchase those skin packs and can equip or unequip certain capes for their skin via the Character Creator. A few examples of skin pack capes are as follows:
Name | Cape |
Ender Dragon Wings Cape | |
Devil’s Cape | |
Dracula’s Cape | |
Evil Wizard’s Cape |
Minecon:
Every year, MineCon activities were the only way to gain a new limit. There were official events organized by Minecraft that took place throughout the year. Players would have to sign up for the event and ensure that their tickets have been redeemed. Only then a Cape was then awarded for their inclusion in the event. All events from 2017 onwards were conducted online, and no reward for participation was awarded; on May 12, 2020, Mojang has disabled all unused MINECON Cape codes. Here are some of the MINECON capes from the past.

By innovating a potential concept:
People in the past have been awarded capes for giving ideas which were later incorporated into Minecraft. A great example is Reddit user u/billyk_ who was given a personal turtle cape for suggesting that turtles be added to Minecraft.
How to get a cape in Minecraft with mods like OptiFine
There are lots of Minecraft mods that can get you a cape. But the best of these mods — although it costs a bit of money — is OptiFine.
If you haven’t already heard of it, OptiFine is a massive Minecraft mod that revamps the game’s graphics engine and lets you optimize the game for your computer. It’s possibly the most popular Minecraft mod of all time, and a necessity for anyone looking to install shader packs.
Along with performance changes, OptiFine also gives you the ability to design and wear custom capes. But unlike the mod’s other features, capes are locked at the start.
You can pick what your cape will look like before you buy.
Optifine
Once your cape is active, you should see it appear on your character the next time you open the game. If it’s not, make sure that you have OptiFine installed and capes turned on in-game: Open Options, then Skin Customization, and then make sure Cape is set to ON.
The default OptiFine cape has the letters OF on it.
Mojang; Optifine; William Antonelli/Insider
You can change the cape’s design at any time (or temporarily deactivate it) by opening Minecraft, selecting Options, Skin Customization, OptiFine Cape, and then Open Cape Editor.
Only the colors can be changed by default, but you can also select the Banner option and then follow the instructions to create a custom cape on this page.
How to Get a Cape in Minecraft
Minecraft players can obtain capes both for money and free. In this section, we’ll share three different methods of acquiring one.
Migrate Your Account to Get a Cape
Recently, Minecraft developers issued a notice for Java Edition players. All Mojang accounts have to be migrated to Microsoft accounts. This requirement is related to safety reasons and is mandatory, though the exact date of the migration period end is yet unknown. If a player fails to move the account, they won’t be able to play the Java Edition anymore.
Thankfully, this process doesn’t change anything about the game. Furthermore, every player gets a free cape for their efforts. Here’s how to move your Mojang account to Microsoft:
- Run Minecraft Launcher or log in to Minecraft.net with your Mojang account.
- You should see an invitation to migrate, click on it.
- Create a new Microsoft account or sign in with an existing one.
- Create an Xbox.com account. There’s no need to own an Xbox to do this.
- Confirm the migration of your Mojang account.
- When you relaunch the game, a new cape should appear in your inventory.
Buy Minecraft Skins to Get a Cape
The account migration requirement only relates to Minecraft Java Edition. Thus, you can’t obtain a free cape if you play Minecraft Bedrock Edition. However, you can purchase or download a free skin with a cape. Follow the steps below to do this:
- Visit Minecraft Marketplace or any other site you prefer and browse for the skin you like. Download it to your device.
- Log in to Minecraft.net and click Preferences, located in the upper-left corner of your screen.
- You should now see your current Minecraft skin. Click Choose File, located to the right from it.
- Select your .png skin file and then click the Upload button.
- The website will refresh, and your character will appear dressed in the new skin. When you launch the game, the character will wear a cape (or any other skin you uploaded.)
Use Mods to Get a Cape
Although players can get a free cape in Minecraft Java Edition, this game version is quite limited when it comes to skin selection. You can get various capes using mods, but other players will only see them if they have the same mod. If you want to obtain a cape for personal reasons rather than to show off, though, it’s worth a shot. Here are some of the best mods allowing you to wear a cape in Minecraft Java:
- Advanced Cape Mod. Minecraft Forge is required for installation. To set a cape, press the C key and enter the URL of your desired cape. Any URL will work as long as it ends with “.png.” You can also add custom capes.
- Optifine Mod. The main objective of this mod is game optimization and FPS boost. Players can also add a cape to their skin. Other players won’t see it, but this option is great for streaming.
How to get a cape in Minecraft without mods
In Minecraft, capes are usually given out to users who attend certain events or complete specific tasks.
For example:
- From 2011 to 2016, attending the real-world MINECON event would earn you a special cape. Mojang brought these capes back for MINECON 2019, but only for Bedrock Edition players.
- Minecraft mapmakers who’ve had their maps accepted into might be awarded a cape.
- If you bought Minecraft: Java Edition before December 2020, converting your Mojang or legacy account into a Microsoft account gets you the «Migrator» cape.
A selection of capes from Minecraft: Java Edition.
Mojang
Additionally, players who attend the upcoming Minecraft Festival in late 2022 will earn an exclusive cape.
There are a few capes that you can get at any time, but they’re exclusive to Bedrock Edition.
- The Pan Cape is given to players who download the beta versions of Bedrock Edition.
- There are nearly two dozen unique capes that Bedrock players can get by buying skin packs, like the Adventure Time Mash-up or Star Wars Classic Pack.
You can buy capes in Bedrock Edition.

To equip your capes, head to Minecraft’s character creation page and change your skin. You’ll see all the capes you’ve unlocked there.

Java vs. Bedrock Editions
Minecraft Java and Bedrock Editions differ significantly. When it comes to capes, each one has its pros and cons. While more caped skins are available online for the Bedrock Edition, Java allows more cape customization options. More mods are available for Java, and they are generally easier to install. Plus, as mentioned in previous sections, Java Edition players can now receive a free cape for migrating their Mojang account to Microsoft account. The physics are different, too. Surprisingly, an older Java Edition released in 2011 offers more realistic cape physics. The cape can move freely in all directions, while in Bedrock, it can only move up and down. In other words, if a cape is truly important for you, Minecraft Java Edition is a better option.
