Summoning Invasions[]

Since , you can use a warhorn to summon an invasion. However, these cost two thousand coins and you must have one thousand five hundred alignment to the faction to use it. added an invasion specifically to summon invasions (previously this had to be done by spawning the invasion spawner entity).

Invasions or warhorns of any faction can be summoned anywhere at varying sizes using the following commands:

The is the desired faction in capital letters, and the is the subfaction for the faction that was first chosen (if applicable). An example command would be or . The specifies how many mobs must be killed before the invasion is defeated (defaults to the normal amount of a random value around 30-70).

The invasion spawner can be broken in creative mode by left-clicking it.

Note: if you are trying to summon an invasion but they immediately disappear, make sure you are not on peaceful difficulty.

Sub-biomes[]

Umbar Hills

Several ranges of tall hills run across Umbar. This sub-biome features much steeper hills than can be found elsewhere in Umbar, which can be almost mountainous in size. There are three ranges of Umbar Hills — one that runs along the length of the Cape of Umbar, one that separates Umbar from the Southron Coasts in the northeast, and one that separates Umbar from the Coasts in the southeast. The latter range is the source of several rivers. Despite the hilly nature of this region, settlements can still generate here, albeit more rarely than in the low-lying fief-lands of Umbar.

Umbar Forest

The Umbar Forest is a sub-biome of Umbar that contains a greater concentration of trees, predominantly oak, cedar, cypress, and palm. The Men of Umbar likely use these forests to supply materials for their great fleets. No settlements can be found here, though camps occasionally generate. The Umbar Forest makes up much of the southwestern portion of the Umbar biome, separating the region from the Southron Coasts.

Taming[]

At an alignment level of +50 with certain factions, players become able to ride that faction’s Wargs. Wargs must be tamed before they can be ridden, a process that is much like taming horses. To tame a Warg, the player must right-click it to get on it; after a few seconds, the Warg will most likely throw the player off. This must be done repeatedly until the Warg decides it likes the player (feeding the Warg meat can speed up this process). Once a Warg accepts a player, it becomes tamed and will not despawn.

When unequipped, tamed Wargs will wander around as they normally do, taking mounted players along for the ride. To properly ride a Warg, the player needs to put a saddle () on it. Riding a Warg is similar to riding a horse; by default, the player right-clicks to mount, uses the WASD keys to move, and the left shift button to dismount.

Note that if an NPC attacks a Warg the player is riding, the Warg will bite the NPC. Wargs do 3 () points of damage to an unarmored NPC when the player is still riding the Warg.

Players can heal tamed Wargs by feeding them meat — this includes raw meat, cooked meat, and even rotten flesh (). Just like with wolves in vanilla Minecraft, the angle of the Warg’s tail indicates how much health it has. A horizontal tail angle means it is at full health; as this health decreases, the tail starts to point downward.

Players can equip tamed Wargs with Warg armour to give their mounts a formidable boost in protection.

Alignment Entity Registry[]

This feature is present in: Legacy only.

You can register mobs from the vanilla game or other Mods with the LotR Mod’s alignment system.

This is done in the file found within the folder. That file contains instructions on how to register a mob by adding a line of text to the file.

An example registration line would be:

name=Zombie,faction=GONDOR,targetEnemies=true,bonus=5

which would register vanilla Zombies with the , give them AI to target* enemies of the faction (such as Mordor Orcs), and award players a +5 alignment bonus with the appropriate enemy factions ( and others) upon killing a Zombie.

*The registered mob is given targeting AI, but not attack AI. Thus, it will be able to select appropriate attack targets, but if it is not already capable of attacking a target, it won’t actually be able to attack those selected targets.

This feature is present in: Renewed only.

In the renewed version, a similar effect is achievable using datapacks. NPCs’ faction alignments are defined in JSON files; the default alignments for the LotR mod are located in the directory. A datapack can edit these alignments or add new ones for other entity types from the vanilla game or other mods.

JSON files for entity type settings must be placed in the relevant namespace for that entity type — this being for the mod’s entities, for vanilla’s, and other values for other mods’. For example, a file defining an alignment for the vanilla zombie entity would be located at .

Why the move to 1.16?[]

For many long years, Mevans, the developer of the mod, had been reluctant to move the mod to a newer version of Minecraft, as seen in a blog post in 2015, and his long-running forum thread.

However, in 2020, he changed his mind on the matter, as seen in a comment on the mod’s Facebook page when asked why he moved to 1.15:

A few mishaps with 1.7.10 forge/gradle which temporarily made it impossible to build the mod, and had us worried that it might spell the end of development for the mod. Luckily I managed to fix them by updating to newer versions of the support software, but it did make me think about what would happen if support for some aspect of 1.7.10 forge/gradle were ever withdrawn in a way that wasn’t fixable. That, and some newfound appreciation for the newer versions.

In a nutshell, the mod is being updated to 1.15 because it currently runs on a version of Minecraft that dates back to mid-2014, for which Forge has long since ended support, and which may therefore stop working at some point for reasons beyond our control (though we do hope not). Furthermore, the code changes between 1.15 and 1.16 are expected to be minor , so updating to future versions of Minecraft should not be excessively difficult.

Tactics[]

There are several ways to cope with an invasion:

Avoid dangerous biomes

Make sure to travel the more peaceful regions of Middle-earth (see list below) if you’ve got the choice. For example, in Eriador and its surroundings there are the Rangers of the North to back you up (if you are a good-aligned player). When you are followed by some foes, it’s a good idea to flee to a spot where some of your friends are waiting to take care of your pursuers.

Run

The best thing to do when you hear the sound of the horn is just run the way you are facing. The invasion always takes place near the spot you are standing. As long as you stay near the floating sword, more waves of foes will show up. Fleeing is not cowardice, just pure survival instinct. After some moments running, you can turn around and cope with what is still following you. When you don’t feel capable or equipped to deal with a large number of foes or when you would be fighting in difficult terrain just leave the place. Or is this just the challenge you’re seeking?

Use the terrain

It’s easier to attack downhill than uphill. Make sure that no trees, buildings or boulders obstruct your view. Think about holes in the ground or steep cliffs, where you could fall down when you have to flee again. You can also hide behind some obstacles and wait for your foes to seek you out. Or fight with your back against a wall so there’s no risk of getting stabbed from behind but also no opportunity to flee. Perhaps circle around the floating sword at a distance to move yourself to a better position. Also, when you jump down while attacking a foe, you can deal more damage (critical strike). Another good tactic is to make a pillar of blocks and shoot down at your foes.

Claim land

Make sure to put banners atop gold, silver, or bronze blocks, and put these around your base. This won’t just protect your base from terrain damage dealt by other players (on a server), but will also prevent invasions from spawning too close to your house.

Divide and Conquer

Or as the Romans put it «divide et impera». Each time you go near the floating sword, the horn sounds and a new wave of foes will occur. So carefully re-approach the sword until the horn sounds and then immediately back up a bit. Deal with the wave that showed up until most of the foes are gone. Repeat this until the invasion ends. You can either take out the foes from afar with a bow or crossbow, try to lure them away in small groups (remember that wargs have a longer tracking range) or wait until someone else takes care of them. Also remember, Orcs sometimes take each other out in a skirmish.

This tactic should be used only if you have decent armour and weapons, or if a faction is invading land near your base (banners can help solve the latter problem). Despite the danger of death, the XP and alignment you’ll get can make it worthwhile.

If this tactic may be effective, it is much harder to put in practice because : now the sight range of the invasion spawner towards the player to spawn more waves has been extended.

Take a break

When you are hurt, it’s a good idea to leave the battle, take cover, eat something, perhaps drink a potion and wait until you have recovered some of your health. Then re-enter the fight. Your foes can wait that moment.

If you have magical drinks such as athelas brew, Orc draught, or miruvor, now is the time to use them. The former brew will regenerate your health for a time, and all of the three drinks will boost your strength. Or if you have positive Fangorn alignment and the faction’s magical Ent-draughts are available to you, drink some with various helpful effects.

Bring some friends

Hire some troops from a captain or travel with some players in a multiplayer world. That way, you can help each other out when someone is in trouble.

Collect the loot

When you hear an explosion sound, the sword disappears. You have to deal with the last wave of the invasion. After finishing off these last foes, you can peacefully walk the battlefield and collect all the loot your foes have dropped. Don’t do this during the fight, because gathering loot will probably distract you from the foe that deals you the deadly blow. In multiplayer don’t start to quarrel about how to divide the loot!

Miscellaneous Weapons[]

These are special weapons than do not fit any of the groups above.

Balrog whips can not be crafted but are only dropped by a balrog in Utumno. They deal a decent amount of damage and set the ground on fire wherever they hit. They deal +7 damage, and have 100% reach and swing speed. The whip can also be charged like a bow to unleash a streak of fire along the ground.
This mace is quite a powerful weapon, which hurts preferably «good» faction NPCs and animals. It currently cannot be obtained in survival mode, without the use of the /give command or selecting it in the Creative menu whilst in creative mode. It deals +8 damage and has 68% swing speed and 100% reach. The mace also deals knockback similar to a hammer. The Mace can also be charged like a bow to unleash a blast around the player damaging and knocking back enemies.
Orc bombs are explosive blocks like TNT. They come in different strengths and types. The crater left by even the lowest strength bomb is bigger than that of a creeper or termite explosion. Orc bombs are used by Orc bombardiers and can also be crafted by evil players on any Orkish crafting table except for Gundabad.
This staff is quite a powerful weapon, which hurts preferably «evil» faction NPCs. Like the Mace of Sauron, it currently cannot be obtained in survival mode. It deals +8 damage hitting normaly and has 100% swing speed and reach. The Staff can also be charged like a bow to unleash a glowing blue orb forward like an arrow except it doesn’t fall to ground, after it hits the ground, enemy, player or a certain distance it will explode damaging enemies.

Хоббиты (id: 514) — это маленькие жители, которые живут в Средиземье Майнкрафта ПЕ. В моде они такого же маленького размера, как и в книге. С них дропаются фрукты и пироги.

Лесные эльфы (id: 518, 521, 522) — появляются в биомах леса Майнкрафта. Имеют длинные уши и оставляют за собой стрелы и лук.

Всадник Варг (id: 515) — орки, которые ездят на бронированных Варгах.

Варги (id: 513) — животные, которые приручены орками и используются для езды. Дропают после смерти мех Варгов и кости Варгов.

The Alignment Meter[]

The alignment meter shows the selected faction and your current rank for it — «stranger» in the beginning. Use the arrow keys <left> and <right> to display another faction. <Up> and <down> cycles through different groups — Westlands, Rhûn, Harad. The gold ring indicates, how far you made it to the next rank — in the example a bit over halfway from «Esquire» (+500.0) to «Captain» (+1000.0). After you earned or lost alignment, the exact number will be displayed for a short time (see third bar below).

If you are far from a faction’s location, then your alignment bar will look much like the one above. However, if you enter a region of Middle-earth where a faction is active, then your alignment bar will show arrows on the left and the right, like the one below:

If you see these arrows, it means this alignment meter is «active», meaning that you’re in that faction’s Area of Influence, and that killing NPCs will have an effect on your alignment. The arrows will become less visible (see the bar below) as you move further away from the centre, and will disappear entirely when you are completely outside.

If you decide to pledge to the displayed faction, the gold ring will be replaced by a red seal. Note that in the example, it moved slightly up in the next bar, as the player earned a bit of alignment (793.5 -> 794.1):

This means that killing Gundabad Orcs in the Lone-lands for example won’t affect the player’s alignment with the Rohan, unless there are Rohirrim nearby. This commonly happens with hired armies, or using for example. The alignment meter then displays round bullets instead of arrows beside it (see below), in which case kills count half as much as in the full alignment area.

Invasions as of .

As of , invasions spawn with the sword of the appropriate faction (with the exception of Hobbits (pipe), Fangorn (stick), Gundabad (cleaver) and some sub-factions because they do not have faction-specific weapons or armour.)

Also, a warhorn (at that time named «Horn of Conquest») was introduced to give players the opportunity to summon invasions from allied factions.

made it possible to spawn warg invasions for every evil faction that has wargs.

added a progress bar for invasions, ending the invasion when enough units are killed by players/hired troops. It also increased the distance from the player that invasions can spawn mobs and added the command and some bonuses for defeating invasions (50 conquest points and the «Hail the Victorious» achievement).

Captains[]

In order to get started with hiring an army, you must collect some silver coins and then find one of the various captains in the Mod. There are captains for both good and evil factions.

Each trader type has a certain alignment level that you must reach before you can hire units from them. Otherwise, when spoken to they will inform you that you need to gain more reputation, do more evil deeds, prove your trustworthiness, or something to that effect. For example, to hire from a Gondorian Captain you must have at least +150 Gondor alignment.

Hiring Huorns

First you plant a sapling (oak, birch or beech). Then you must right-click it with a golden Ent draught and if you have the trust of the Ents, you will have a hired Huorn. For this to be successful, you must have at least +500 alignment with Fangorn. As an additional note, the sapling does not get used up in the process, so you only need one sapling to create multiple Huorns for your defence. Successfully growing a hired Huorn earns the achievement «From little Acorns…».

Melee Weapons[]

This type of weapon is held in hand. You have to stand quite close to your foe to reach it. If your weapon has 100% reach and you and your foe both stand on the near end of the block, you can have two blocks in between, but not more. For a second type of melee weapons with increased reach, see the .

The melee attack cooldown timer.

Note that as of , all melee weapons have a cooldown timer, activated whenever you hit an opponent. Until this cooldown timer runs out, you’ll be incapable of dealing any damage to your enemy. If a weapon has a speed of 100%, its cooldown speed is 15 ticks, or 0.75 seconds.

Battleaxes are craftable weapons used to defeat foes and cut wood blocks faster, similar to an ordinary axe.  Unlike daggers or spears, battleaxes are only used by a number of select factions (Elves and Gondorians have no use for them).  They are used mainly by Dwarves, Orcs, Uruks and the Rohirrim. They deal their equipment sets base damage +2 and have a slower swing speed then swords.
A club is the equivalent to a hammer, as it has a greater knock-back effect than other weapons. It is used only by Dunlendings and does 4 damage.
The dagger is a new type of weapon, similar to a sword but dealing less damage (-2 from the equipment set’s base damage). A dagger can be crafted on the appropriate crafting table using one ingot and one stick. There are many types of dagger, from all sorts of different factions.

Additionally, each dagger type has a poisoned variant, which deals a poison effect to the victim (duration varies, but tends to last longer on higher difficulties). These can be crafted using a normal dagger and a bottle of poison. Some NPCs (such as Orcs) can be found wielding these poisoned daggers but most NPC types do not use them.

Hammers are a new type of weapon, crafted with three sticks and four ingots. Like battleaxes, hammers are only used by certain factions, Rohirrim don’t use them (a heavy hammer is unwieldy when mounted!) and neither do elves or Dunlendings. Hammers are mainly used by Dwarves, Gondorians, Orcs and Uruks. NPCs can sometimes spawn holding a hammer, and a hammer in the hands of an NPC deals the same increased knockback, so watch out! They deal their equipment sets base damage +2 and have a significantly slower swing speed, but also do +1 knockback.
The mace is a type of weapon that is currently used only by Half-trolls and Near Harad. It’s equivalent to a hammer statwise. There is also another mace known as the charred mallorn mace that is not specific to any faction. They deal their equipment sets base damage +2, have a significantly slower swing speed and do +1 knockback.
The Orc Skull Staff is the weapon that all Orc chieftains wield. It deals 6.5 () damage, and has 100% swing speed and reach.
The sword and the scimitar are short range weapons. They can be crafted on the appropriate crafting table using two ingots and one stick. There are many types of swords, from all sorts of different factions. There are some special swords that one can craft, like the magical Morgul blade, the sword of command or the ancient sword (crafted from bits found in remains). They deal their equipment sets base damage, with default range and attack speed.
