Fable[]

Whisper is first mentioned by Weaver when the Hero of Oakvale is first brought to the Heroes’ Guild, being referred to as one of their brightest young pupils. After the Hero is awakened by her, Whisper mentions that he talks in his sleep, as well as the fact that he is shorter than she had expected. She trains with the Hero when he is a boy, and the two quickly develop a rivalrous, but strong, friendship. She is constantly in the shadow of her older brother’s success, but remains determined to become stronger.

Whisper and the Hero battle against each other during a few quests. When the Hero competes in the Arena, Whisper joins him at the beginning of the third round. Working side-by-side, the Hero and Whisper manage to defeat multiple Balverines, Bandits, Undead, Trolls, and even the mighty Arachanox, only to be pitted against each other in a fight to the death, thanks to the interference of Jack of Blades. The player can choose to kill Whisper or not, earning 10,000 Gold should he choose to kill her.

If playing The Lost Chapters, and the player chooses not to kill Whisper, the Hero can meet Whisper in the Oakvale tavern, where she reveals that she is leaving, acknowledges the Hero’s superiority as a hero, and tells him how he has been a good friend. However, if the player strikes her in any way, Whisper tells the Hero that she is leaving, and that at first she thought that the Hero let her live out of kindness, but now she thinks it was to make her have to live with the shame.

If the player lets Whisper live, the Oracle reveals that she returns to her homeland in the South Islands, where she defends her people and is praised as a true Hero. On the way there, her ship is said to have been attacked by pirates, all of which are killed.

Early Life[]

CANONICITY WARNING: The following information is derived from Fable: Blood Ties.

Page grew up very poor in Bowerstone Industrial, back when the smoke from the factories was just starting to blacken the air and the detritus of the trade ships was just starting to pollute the waters. Sometimes she would sit on the edge of the docks and watch as industry grew in Bowerstone, never dreaming that what she saw was only the start of something bigger, stating that a child dreams of things getting better, not worse.

Her father left her family when she was eight, and her mother fell ill when she was barely eleven. She ended up working in the factories next to her older brother, Cedric, who watched out for her but died a year later due to a machine accident. Her mother died shortly after, and with no one left, Page began to live in the factories, which no one was aware of at first.

She would be found underneath the floorboards or behind steam powered machines, reading by candlelight, which was her only escape from the hell around her. She didn’t have whole books though; the only reading material she had was discarded pages she’d find washed up on the docks, which she’d dry out and treasure, thus earning her the nickname Page from the other factory workers.

Wanting to go ‘where the books lived’, Page sought out an order of monks that were on the outskirts of Bowerstone, being told that they were very learned and very loving of books. The monks accepted her into their order, teaching her how to think and how to fight. Page decribed them as devastating, but the gentlest of souls, only fighting to defend themselves or to offer protection for the helpless.

Once Logan’s tyranny was in full force, one of the first things to go was the order of monks. They refused to leave however, and one night awoke to find their sanctuary ablaze. Those that escaped the fire ended up being shot by Logan’s men. Page, left as the only survivor, returned to Bowerstone Industrial, determined to not let others suffer under Logan’s reign like she had, forming the Resistance, which was dedicated to bringing Logan down.

Fable: The Lost Chapters[]

Origin[]

Will or Will Power, can be traced back to the Old Kingdom, from the birth of William Black. Not a lot is known of Black’s childhood, but as an adult, he was able to protect his village from attack, as well as perform feats that would require the strength of ten grown men, with his powers of mind. These acts soon became celebrated as the «Powers of Will«. After Black annihilated The Court and crowned himself Archon, his Will power had become so great that the world seemed to re-shape itself in accordance with his wishes; cities were erected in mere weeks, and machines were built that ran on Will power alone. His children also carried on the Will tradition, but with no enemies to fight, they grew petty and used their powers to terrorize the people instead of help them. After the Archon disappeared, his children began to vie for power. One of the Archon’s commanded a great tower be built to channel Will energy. Just after its construction, a bright light filled the air and all of Albion shook. By morning, the tower was gone, the Old Kingdom lay in ruins, and Will power effectively disappeared from the world.

It wasn’t until a mercenary and bandit by the name of Nostro met an old man named Scythe that Will power returned to the world. Scythe is speculated to be the first Archon, William Black himself. Scythe sensed that Nostro unknowingly carried the same power that all of his descendants had shared. Scythe taught Nostro how to be a leader of men, which included tutelage in the Powers of Will. Nostro then went on, with Scythe’s sage counsel, to establish the Heroes’ Guild. It was here that, amongst other things, that Nostro taught other Heroes to use Will power. Thus, Will users were reborn into the world.

It is unknown how Will is created, though most believe it is made from the soul or mind while others think it is from a unique magical trait in the blood. If only Black had this power, however, then it could mean any Will user is related to him. The three facts that are known about Will is that it is the energy that shapes magic into several powers that humans or the Earth itself possess, and that Will or magic cannot be destroyed, disrupted, blocked, or negated except by using other magical powers. People with strong control over their Will power may also bend reality to their own wishes and/or desires. In the Old Kingdom many things like Shards were powered by Willpower. This is another known fact about Will: while a Hero’s Will might not be strong and their spells not powerful, the raw magical energy or Willpower itself cannot be blocked for there is no substance or material natural or created that is immune to Will and its effects.

Fable: The Journey.

Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic 2: The Sith Lords.

, it morphs your character, in this case increasing their height and to a lesser extent their proportions. It makes the hero look more slender, lithe & agile. It is represented with an arrow in a bullseye.

  • This ability increases the speed at which you reload your ranged weapons and how fast you swing your melee weapons. The increments are 1.1, 1.15, 1.2, 1.25, 1.3. It is represented by a hand holding a sword.

Reception and Legacy[]

Fable was generally well-received. The original Xbox version of the game has an aggregate critic score of 85% at both Metacritic and Game Rankings. The game won more than fifty awards.

Though pointing out several flaws in the game such as bland character designs, Marc Saltzman of USAToday.com stated that the game «should satisfy you with its incredible depth, open-ended game play, and a solid story that gets even better about half-way through the adventure.» Fable has been praised for its concept of free will and having consequences for the Hero’s actions.

The short length of the main plot was criticized by reviewers, but many overlooked this due to the much larger array of side quests available to the player.
One of the complaints that arose upon the release of Fable was the fact that it failed to include features that Peter Molyneux had mentioned while the game was still in development.

One of the features that were not included in the game’s release was the Hero’s ability to have children despite the fact that Molyneux had previously mentioned that the Hero’s own children would be significant in the game. Molyneux reacted to these complaints by means of a public apology posted on the official Lionhead forums, on which he said, «If I have mentioned any feature in the past , for whatever reason, didn’t make it as I described into Fable, I apologize.»

The PC and Xbox versions of Fable: The Lost Chapters were also well-received, with slightly lower Metacritic and Game Rankings averages than the original title. Reviewers such as Greg Kasavin of Gamespot noted that the addition of new content helped prevent the game from becoming stale. 1UP.com previewed the game and found that the additive content didn’t redefine Fable, but helped bulk up the available quests, addressing the complaint of how short the original Fable was. GamePro and IGN judged The Lost Chapters on PC as surpassing its console predecessor.

Sequels

In 2005, a Microsoft Game Studios representative stated that Fable would be among the franchises that would appear on the next-generation Xbox 360. Sequels Fable II and Fable III were released in 2008 and 2010, respectively.

Fable: The Lost Chapters[]

Main article: Fable: The Lost Chapters

Fable: The Lost Chapters was released for Xbox and PC in September 2005. The Lost Chapters includes all content from the original Fable release alongside an expanded storyline, new locations and items. There are also some other minor changes, such as altering Jack of Blades’ voice to be deeper and more menacing.

The Lost Chapters content begins one year after Jack of Blades’ defeat at the hands of the Hero of Oakvale. Whilst struggling to find a place in the world after the events of the original Fable, the Hero gets a call to return to the Guild once again. From there, the Hero must journey to the Northern Wastes to stop Jack once again.

Game Differences[]

Fable/Fable: The Lost Chapters

In Fable and Fable: The Lost Chapters the alignment system is quite simple, it includes solely . There are also three physical trait ‘sliders’ which can affect your appearance: , , and .

Fable Anniversary Edition

Fable Anniversary Edition has Renown, Alignment, Attractiveness, and Scariness. All can be viewed in Stats > Personality > Hero.

  • Renown is increased by performing quests, interacting with villagers, showing off trophies, and doing heroic deeds.
  • Alignment becomes more positive with good deeds, and more negative with evil deeds. It can also be affected by things such as tattoos and learning certain spells.
  • Attractiveness and Scariness are affected by apparel, hair style, and tattoos.

Fable II

In Fable II, the alignment system has been expanded greatly. In addition to the original alignments in Fable, the following new alignments are included in Fable II:

Along with the following physical traits:

  • (editable with Knothole Island)

These new scales of alignment will allow players to create numerous different combinations, for a truly unique experience every time you play Fable II.

Fable III

The alignment system for Fable III is similar to that of Fable II. While all of the scales are present, only Morality, Attractiveness and Weight are visibly recorded and can be viewed on the Hero Status panel in the main room of the Sanctuary. The others are scaled invisibly and have an effect on how others view the Hero.

A new feature is a mechanism called which has the Hero show their ‘true character’, going as far as to have the Hero sprouting a pair of wings. The colour and shape of the wings are based on the Hero’s alignment – from white and pristine (good), black and ragged (evil), or even eagle-like white wings (neutral) and the size of the wings depending on the amount of followers the player has from small wings (few followers) to large wings (many followers). If the player begins to take their morality to the utmost extremes, then they begin obtaining special visual effects. The Extreme Morphing can also be used as part of an interaction with an NPC.

Outside of an extreme morph, the Hero’s appearance still changes, but on a lesser scale. Depending on their morality and purity, their facial features will look different. (See .)
