Notes[]
- The Cultist’s blanks and armor will carry over into their past, giving them advantage over the protagonist during the final duel.
- Dead players can block moving bricks using their body in Winchester
However, the chest that spawns will be a Revival Chest, and if the player revives their friend and returns, it will be locked.
‘s minigame, stopping them.
- During The Cultist’s Past, one of the players can take both guns off the pedestals and render the other player weaponless. The other gun picked cannot be used or dropped.
- If either player has stolen something, in the Cultist’s past, the Cultist may refer to the main character as «thief», a reference to the Nintendo game «Link’s Awakening».
- When entering another Gungeoneer’s past, the Cultist will only have a Dart Gun
In The Bullet’s past, both characters start with nothing. When the Bullet acquires the wooden Blasphemy, the Cultist will get one too.
.
- When using the Gun That Can Kill The Past, the Cultist will become a skeleton during the teleporting animation, just like when the player has a Clown Mask.
- If The Gunslinger dies but The Cultist remains alive, infinite starter gun or Makarov or 38 Special drops will arrive until The Gunslinger is revived or if The Cultist isn’t currently in a room with enemies.
- The Cultist can never start the speedrun timer. It may be possible to beat a run in 0 seconds if Player 1 can be killed in the first room.
- Activating Turbo Mode will only apply the effect to Player 1 until Player 1 is killed, in which Player 2 will have the effect.
- The Resourceful Rat ignores The Cultist when stealing an item.
- The only NPC that will not ignore the Cultist is Winchester and his game. In the Breach, Winchester will ignore the Cultist.
- During the Resourceful Rat fight, if both the Cultist and player is alive, the Cultist will be tied down during the Punch Out game, not being able to do anything.
Quotes[]
Talking to him:
- «Only a few weeks left on the force.»
- «I’m retiring in 3 weeks… getting too old for this.»
- «Have I shown you my pictures of my family?»
- «Sending my daughter off to college soon. She’s a good kid.»
- «Thirty years on this beat to the day. Never needed to draw my gun before.»
- «You’re a loose cannon, kid, but you’re good police.»
- «Let’s do this next one by the book.»
- «You’re as wild as McNutty.»
Dying:
«Kid… listen up. Today might have been my last day on the force, and I might have only been down here because of you…but this ain’t your fault. Yeah, yeah, you let me get hit by all those bullets. Sure, you probably could’ve given me one of those fancy guns you’ve been hoarding. But the point is, this ain’t your fault. -cough- Give my badge to my kids. Tell them I love them.»
Story[]
The Convict, formerly known as Laser Lily, was the head of a criminal organization. After bribing Black Stache into overlooking her crimes, he betrayed her and conducted a sting operation on her headquarters. She was captured by Hegemony forces and chose to face the Gungeon over life imprisonment.
Past Kill
If the Bullet That Can Kill The Past is used on The Convict, she will be brought back to her office right before being arrested. Black Stache and 4 Hegemony goons will enter the room soon after. Black Stache explains that his agreement with The Convict is over, orders the Hegemony goons to arrest her, and then leaves the office. One of the Hegemony goons will begin to list the myriad of reasons why The Convict is being taken in and then demands for her to put her arms on the desk in submission. The Player is then given the option to «Teach them a lesson» or «Teach them a lesson, again». Both will result in The Convict flipping the large desk in front of her. The Convict will have her Budget Revolver and a Thompson Sub-Machinegun to defeat the 4 Hegemony goons, after which she will make her way downstairs to the dance floor. Here, a fight will ensue between The Convict and Black Stache. Should the Convict be victorious, she will be able to leave the building and escape on a Hovercar.
When entering the past, the Convict will have Thompson Sub-Machinegun and Budget Revolver as available weapons, along with Enraging Photo and Molotov as items.
Defeating the Convict’s past will unlock the Briefcase of Cash and the Enraging Photo for all characters.
Trivia[]
- Occasionally, when viewing the minimap, the chambers of the Yellow Chamber may blink. The chamber may also fall away to reveal a large eye.
- This item is reference to Robert W. Chambers’s book of short stories titled The King in Yellow.
- The fact that this item can also be unlocked by entering the eyeball room possibly correlates to the , which both features a glaring eye and shares a similar color palette to the tentacles.
- On occasion, the tentacles that appear to kill the charmed enemy will appear a slight distance away from said enemy rather than directly below them, but the tentacles will still kill the enemy.
- When the charmed enemy is in a minecart by the time the room is cleared, the charmed enemy will stay in the minecart indefinitely instead of dying like normal. While in the minecart, it won’t shoot, and will die once ejected from the minecart.
- Charmed Bullet Sharks and Dets will not die after the room is cleared, as they move away from the tentacles. They will drop casings if killed by the player.
- Charmed Lead Maidens close when the room is cleared, becoming invulnerable. With nothing to aggro on, they remain closed and cannot be killed.
Story[]
The Gunslinger is conscious of the Gungeon’s situation and knows what happened there after he mastered it. He realizes his goal is to revert all of this, by killing his future self*, the Lich, stopping him from becoming Gungeon Master and stopping the Great Bullet from falling, which would prevent the creation of the Gungeon.
As shown by talking to the Blacksmith, he was originally a gun wizard who was tinkering with time magic, only for the Great Bullet to strike his dungeon. It is unknown how he became the lich or why the bullet struck, but the gun was created and the dungeon was reformed into the Gungeon we know of today.
*It is important to note that the only reason the Gun That Can Kill The Past was able to be used to «kill the future» is because a Lich was shot by a BTCKTP by a Paradox, giving rise to the Gunslinger, who then uses the GTCKTP to kill his past of being a Lich. The ability to kill the future is not an innate feature of the Gun or Bullet That Can Kill The Past.
Past Kill
Traveling to the past takes you to Bullet Hell (Note that the hole in the Aimless Abyss that you’d typically take to bullet hell is unavailable, necessitating getting The Bullet That Can Kill The Past). Unlike other pasts, you keep your health and all the items you have gathered during the run, as if going to Bullet Hell normally. Everything is identical to normal Bullet Hell until the Lich boss fight.
Instead of fighting a normal Lich that has three phases, you fight 2 Liches simultaneously, similar to the Glitch Chest Boss. One Lich is normal, and the other one has the same visual effect as The Paradox. The Paradox Lich fires Jammed bullets and has increased health. Luckily, the Liches use only their first phase, and the player will win once both are defeated. The final scene shows the Gungeon as it looked before the Bullet crashed into it and the victory screen shows the Gunslinger throwing away his gun (a variant of the title screen), implying that time was rewritten and the Gungeon was never created, fracturing the timeline and turning the Gungeon into a paradox.
This leads into the events of Exit the Gungeon, where the now paradox Gungeon begins to crumble.
It is unknown what happened to the Gunslinger after he completed his mission. However we can assume that he decides not to attempt to create the gun that can kill the past and accidentally summoning the Great Bullet, implied by him throwing his gun away in his victory screen card,
Clutter[]
Clutter is a wide variety of minor objects found throughout the Gungeon, ranging from flowers to crates to skeletons. A few kinds of clutter can be found atop tables. Some clutter objects will stop a single bullet before being destroyed, while others do not obstruct gunfire. All clutter breaks instantly on contact with a Gundead creature or Gungeoneer. Clutter has a very tiny chance to spawn a Gun Fairy when broken. If the Pot Shots challenge is active, clutter objects have a chance to fire bullets at the player as they break.
Alone among clutter objects, stalagmites in the Black Powder Mine absorb multiple bullets before breaking, and block the movement of Gundead.
Trivia[]
- Nicknames that NPCs refer to The Convict as include:
- Jumpsuit
- Jailbird
- Lawbreaker
- Unlike the other 5 Gungeoneers, the Convict does not get a «Run Away» option during her past; both options presented will result in a shootout and eventual boss fight against Black Stache.
- The Convict’s past is based off of Hotline Miami.
- The Convict’s alternate costume may be a reference to the 1979 movie Mad Max.
- If playing in co-op, the Hegemony Goon in the starting cutscene will say “We’ll be taking you and your accomplice in.” instead of “We’ll be taking you in.”
- The music playing in the starting room of the Convict’s past is a theme from The Godfather.
- When speaking with Tonic as the Convict in the Breach, if the player selects the «just wanted to chat» option, the Convict’s old avatar will be displayed for a split second.
Notes[]
- If the shopkeeper has been angered (ex. shooting in shop, stealing), he will not return after revival.
- Allows the collection of duplicate Master Rounds on a single run, all of which count towards unlocking the Super Hot Watch.
- If Pig was also acquired, it will activate first upon death.
- If Gun Soul was also acquired, it will activate first upon death. If the player is killed a second time before retrieving their soul, Clone will respawn them as normal (without the cosmetic effect), but they will still be limited to one heart container. This can be fixed by using the Save Button and resuming the run, or by finding another Gun Soul in order to die and interact with the soul (in both cases, the returned heart containers will be empty).
- If the run was started through a shortcut, the player will be revived on the floor that they started on.
- Curse does not reset when respawning with Clone.
- As The Robot cannot gain heart containers, it always respawns with 6 armor.
- Clone does not carry over into the past; the player will not be revived if they die in the past.
- If the player perfects the Resourceful Rat fights, he will still not steal from the player after revival.
- Players can fight the Resourceful Rat again after respawning, however, upon entering the Resourceful Rat’s lair, any extra will disappear from the player’s inventory.
- If the player is holding more than one Clone when they die, the extra Clones will also be removed from the player’s inventory when they revive. However, extra Clones can still be obtained after the player dies.
- If the player obtains the before they die, it’s not lost after revival.
- If the player is one hit away from death and takes damage while having Glass Guon Stones, they will not break and will remain with the player when they revive.
- If the player respawns from a Clone, they can get another Clone in a chest afterwards. However, it’s extremely rare and usually happens in Rainbow Mode.
- In co-op, if The Paradox starts with Clone, it can be traded with The Cultist and allows The Paradox to continuously carry clones whenever they die and when clone is activated from The Cultist, allowing excessive clone runs unless the game crashes or the players save and quit the game.
- In co-op, if the player with Clone dies first, the Clone is consumed but the effect doesn’t trigger.
Notes[]
- — If the player has Singularity, it spawns a hell portal that sucks enemies in and deals high damage.
- — If the player has Shotgrub, it fires a wide spread of five bullets, which bounce back and split into waving bullets after hitting a wall, similar to the Shotgrub enemy’s attack.
- — If the player has Abyssal Tentacle, the Abyssal Tentacle will become gray and yellow, dealing more damage, as well as being able to latch onto two enemies.
- — If the player also has High Kaliber, the soul spawned by hitting an enemy with High Kaliber initially moves towards the player instead of away.
- — If the player has Dragunfire, it and its projectiles turn grey, it gains an increased rate of fire, and it gains notable knockback on enemies, but loses the piercing attribute.
- — If the player has Pitchfork, it fires green fireballs, setting enemies permanently aflame.
Super Space Turtle DX — If the player has Super Space Turtle, Super Space Turtle becomes jammed, firing small rockets with higher damage.
- The charming effect only occurs upon entering combat; enemies that spawn in waves will not be charmed.
- Upon completing a room with a charmed enemy, tentacles will appear under the enemy and drag it into the floor.
- The charmed enemy will have a stunned effect animation while being killed by the tentacles.
- The tentacles will sometimes not kill the charmed enemy, and it will wander around in the room, trying to kill enemies adjacent to the room it’s in. This is fixed when the tentacles kill a different charmed enemy.
- Yellow Chamber will not provide any armor to The Robot.
- Yellow Chamber will not charm or kill Red-Caped Bullet Kin.
- Occasionally, if a Spent is charmed and the room is cleared, the Spent will be killed by the tentacles and the doors will open despite the next wave of Spent spawning.
- Projectiles from charmed enemies still do damage to the player.
- Some companions, like the Owl, Baby Good Shelleton and R2G2 will still attack charmed enemies on sight.
- If two Yellow Chambers are somehow obtained it can charm a second enemy.
- Money dropped by charmed enemies killed by the player will be collected as if they weren’t charmed.
Notes[]
- Picking up Drill increases the chance of finding the other Payday 2 items, Loot Bag and Clown Mask.
- The amount of enemies and waves is determined by the chest quality, usually having less enemies and waves when used on low-quality chests, and up to 5 waves for S quality chests. D tier (brown) chests will have a single wave, with 2-4 enemies. B tier (green) chests can have anywhere from 2-4 waves. They usually have at least 4-5 enemies per wave, but can occasionally spawn 6.
- When the drill is used in the Keep of the Lead Lord, there’s a chance for it to spawn Bullet King
The same applies for Old King’s chancellor when used in the Abbey of the True Gun.
‘s chancellor, who will chase the player even if left unharmed.
- It is possible for pickups to spawn after completing a wave, including other chests. If the player wants to keep them, they must grab them before they finish all the waves; otherwise, when the room returns to its normal size, the pickup may vanish, if the walls close over it. If it is in the center of the room it will remain.
- The drill cannot be used on any chests that spawn after clearing a wave in the special drill room.
- The drill cannot be used on the roof of the R&G Department if a chest spawns there after the boss is defeated.
- Using the Drill on a fused chest will extinguish the fuse. However, the chest will appear without a fuse in the enlarged room.
- The room will only return to its normal size once the player is inside the radius of the original room.
- Drill can also be used to pick the locks on the trapdoor to Oubliette and the lock on the trapdoor that leads to the Resourceful Rat’s Lair.
- The drill cannot be used on the lock that requires the Gnawed Key.
- When the Drill is used during a Challenge Mode run, each new wave receives its own room modifier(s).
- In the Switch release, completing the waves of enemies while using the drill may cause a game crash.
- The drill appears to, on occasion, fail to render a complete arena, leaving some areas black or untextured; however, the collision remains intact.
- The drill can be used on Brother Albern’s chest. The lock will fall off of it, but it still can’t be opened without speaking to him.
- Chests opened by the drill are rendered indestructible.
- If the player attempts to use Trusty Lockpicks on a chest and it fails, the Drill cannot be used on the chest.
- The drill, if used on a door with a sentient lock, will not spawn any enemies, and will instead instantly vanquish the living lock.
- If a chest spawns in the Resourceful Rat’s Lair, the drill cannot be used. However, it can be used to unlock the special rat chests after the boss fight.
- The generated room is considered a different room, so leaving items on the floor before using the drill will result in them being stolen by the Resourceful Rat.
- The drill does nothing to Mimics.
Shells[]
Shells (also referred to as casings or coins) are the game’s main form of currency, and are often dropped by enemies upon their death. They stay on the ground until retrieved or until combat finishes, at which point they will slide across the floor to the player. Occasionally, they can get stuck doing this and have to be collected manually. They can be used to purchase items in Shops and make wagers with various NPCs. Shells that fall into pits will reappear on top of the player, and usually be automatically collected.
Bullats and their variants will not drop shells if they self-destruct.
Enemies that die from traps triggered by the player such as chandeliers or explosive barrels will give less shells.
If an enemy successfully damages the player they will not give shells.
The shells dropped by Loot Bag won’t be automatically collected, and will disappear after a brief moment. The player needs to walk over them so that they can be picked up.
is worth 1 shell.
is worth 5 shells.
is worth 50 shells.
Notes[]
- — If the player also has Teapot, while reloading the Teapot, a small red aura will appear around Junkan. Every enemy in this aura will be ignited.
- Holding Ser Junkan multiplies the of Junk by 1.5, and the chest destruction loot weight of Gold Junk by 3, making them both more likely to appear over other payouts.
- If the player defeats the Lich when Ser Junkan is at his final level, the normal win screen image will be overridden with an image of Ser Junkan, with the player in the background giving a thumbs up.
- This won’t occur if you choose to kill your past during the run, as you lose all your items.
- This could be implying that Ser Junkan reached a point where he is now considered the protagonist instead of the player.
- Lies also works to upgrade Ser Junkan’s level.
- In co-op, if a player has Ser Junkan at Holy Knight, the player will not be revived if they are not the last player alive. Dying with Ser Junkan while another player is alive will just kill the player normally, and Ser Junkan will be lost.
- The blanks from Ser Junkan’s Holy Knight form are affected by items (for example, Gold Ammolet).
- The Ammonomicon lists this item as «Junk», instead of Ser Junkan.
- Ser Junkan will revert forms whenever Junk is lost, such as by dropping it or using it to complete the Hollow shortcut.
- Unlike regular Junk, Ser Junkan does not synergize with Trashcannon. However, he does have an with Trashcannon.
- When upgraded to Angelic Knight, Ser Junkan’s bullets are affected by bullet upgrades.
- When upgraded to Angelic Knight, Ser Junkan’s bullets are affected by Flak Bullets which may cause lag.
- Ser Junkan is one of the few items that can be dropped by breaking any chest in Rainbow Mode, unless already unlocked.
- Battle Standard can be unlocked by upgrading Ser Junkan to Angelic Knight.
Trivia[]
- After the effect of the item occurs, it will be permanently renamed to «Hero Pig», with a new description and pick-up quote that remain even after the run is over.
- Pick-up quote: «He was so young.»
- Description: «A hero pig. You should have never doubted this pig. He is a true hero.»
- This item may be a reference to the German movie «Siegfried», where a pig saves the protagonist’s life by jumping in front of an arrow.
- This item may also be a reference to a viral video titled «Hero Pig Saves Baby Goat,» in which a pig appears out of nowhere to assist a drowning baby goat. This may be unlikely, however, due to the fact that there was no sacrifice and the video was staged.
- This item may be a reference to the anime «Seven Deadly Sins», where the talking pig Hawk, the Captain of the Order of Scraps Disposal, has identical properties.
- This item may also be a reference to the video game «Minecraft : Story Mode» by Telltale games wherein the protagonist Jesse’s pet pig sacrifices himself to save him and the rest of the cast during the final battle against the Mutant Wither.
- The synergy is a reference to the final fight against Mother Brain in Super Metroid, in which after the baby Metroid is killed, Samus gains the Hyper Beam.
- The synergy refers to the stuffed pig carried by Marvin Boggs (played by John Malkovich) in RED. Malkovich also played the assassin in In the Line of Fire which the Composite Gun is based on.
- The synergy is a reference to the in-game boss Cannon, himself a reference to Ganon from the Legend of Zelda
The pig’s green color may also be an Angry Birds reference
video game series. The synergy name refers to Cannon returning in some formvia the appearance of the pig. The synergy being named «The Return» may also be a reference to the game-over screen from Legend of Zelda 2: Adventure of Link, which includes the line «RETURN OF GANON».

Bugs[]
- If either player dies before exiting to the next chamber elevator, the next chamber will have chests that will not turn into revival chests (except for spawned chests). Opening them will cause them to act as a normal revival chest but if both players are alive, they are able to open the unspawned chests without requiring a key.
- If the player enters co-op as The Paradox and uses the alternative gun skin shrine, the Cultist will start without a gun. Entering a room will spawn a supply drop containing a random starter gun or weak gun, which occurs as a failsafe when any character has no usable guns.
- If the Cultist picks up an item that the Resourceful Rat is stealing, the rat will soft-lock in his current position. He will remain in this state, unable to steal dropped items, until the players advance to the next level.
- If the either player dies while Drill is unlocking a chest, the chest will revive the killed player, but will be unable to finish unlocking, trapping the players in the drill room and softlocking the game.
- Even if holding one of the items used to create The Bullet That Can Kill The Past, the Cultist will be ignored by the Blacksmith. Since none of the items can be dropped, this can result in being unable to give the Blacksmith that bullet part in the run.
Notes[]
- If the Beholster is dead, all Beadies on the current floor become passive and will not have guns. However, they can still deal contact damage.
- The six guns the Beholster holds and uses against the player can be found in game. These guns are Com4nd0, Machine Pistol, Eye of the Beholster, Void Marshal, Trank Gun, and M1911
If all of these guns are given to the Beholster shrine, the player will be given all six guns, and they will all orbit the player and fire while holding the Eye of the Beholster.
.
- Two glitched Beholsters are fought after opening a .
- His eye beam can be cancelled not only with blanks, but also by using Blasphemy. But, contrary to popular belief, not with Casey.
- Because the Beholster’s skin colour is mostly red, the main way to tell if he’s jammed or not before the battle begins is by looking at his teeth.
- Staying a significant distance away from the Beholster can make most of its attacks easy to avoid.
- Since Advanced Gungeons and Draguns, The Beholster has 3 different boss arenas in total, containing:
- 4 large pits, 1 covering each corner.
- A pit dotted near the corners but not touching the exact edges, allowing the player to walk around them.
- 2 pillars parallel to each other lined up horizontally on the far sides of the room with the Beholster in the middle.
- If the player is holding Shock Rounds, lightning will bounce from Beadies to bullets.
- The Beholster’s eye beam can (somehow) be blocked by Guon Stones and Owl, but cannot be blocked by Gatling Gull if he is summoned to fight for the player via Ticket.
Co-op Features[]
- A controller has to be connected to be able to play co-op, otherwise the Cultist does not appear in the Breach. You can talk to the Cultist near the selectable Gungeoneers to start co-op mode.
- Enemy health is increased by 40%.
- There is an increased chance that a pickup spawns upon clearing a room.
-
Guns can be traded between the protagonist and the Cultist via gun dropping.
- This is usually done by holding F for a keyboard or holding the «Down» direction on the D-pad of the controller.
- The same can be done with active items by holding G or «Up» respectively.
- Passive item benefits are only given to the player who picks up the item.
-
Synergies
When playing with The Gunslinger in co-op, Lich’s Eye Bullets works with both players, effectively awarding both of them with every synergy upon gun pickup.
can be shared between players.
- Synergy effects will work with both players. For example, Witch Pistol’s synergy will make all players have larger bullets when held.
- Dead players cannot do any standard player actions except moving and performing a short-range blank by pressing the respective button (or any button on console). The player turns gray once it’s used and cannot use it again until they return to their normal blue color after several seconds. The dead player also can’t use normal blanks, if that player has them stored.
- Players drop all of their guns and items on the ground upon death. These items can be picked up by the surviving player, and items left on the ground may be taken by the Resourceful Rat. Items like Master Rounds and Yellow Chamber will still award a heart container on pickup, but it will not be filled with a heart. This works for both players.
- There are three ways to revive a player in this mode. In every case the dead player will be revived to full HP.
- All unopened chests in the current chamber will turn into revival chests. If a revival chest is opened, the dead player will pop out of it, the chest will be consumed, and other chests in the chamber will revert to normal. Keys are not required to open these chests. It is recommended to check the chest’s quality by looking at the map so that the players don’t lose better grade chests for reviving, but instead using lower grade ones to do so. If a chest is destroyed, it revives the dead player without giving any pickups or Junk.
- Beating any floor boss.
- Using the Friendship Cookie.
Enter the Gungeon[]
Alternate costumes are obtained by killing a Gungeoneer’s past. There is only one alternate costume for each Gungeoneer, except for the Bullet, the Paradox, and the Gunslinger. The Bullet has two skins (only on PS4 and Switch), while the Paradox and the Gunslinger don’t have one. Once a Gungeoneer’s past has been killed, a pile of clothes will appear next to them in The Breach, interacting with the clothes while playing as the appropriate Gungeoneer will swap them into their alternate costume. The pile of clothes will then change appearance to appear as the Gungeoneer’s standard outfit. Changing Gungeoneers will swap them back into their standard outfit.
The alternate costumes are as shown below.
Icon | Name | Gungeoneer |
---|---|---|
Knight | The Marine | |
Beastmaster | The Hunter | |
Jailbird | The Convict | |
Rogue | The Pilot | |
Termbot | The Robot | |
Rabbit, Shell | The Bullet | |
Apple | The Cultist |
