Setting and plot summary

General Di Ravello took over the nation of Medici (located in a fictional Mediterranean archipelago) when Rico was still a child. Rico’s parents were killed during the coup, but Rico managed to escape and eventually join The Agency. Several years after the events of Just Cause 2, Rico has left the Agency and travels back home to Medici to fight Di Ravello in Medici Civil War.

Di Ravello is planning on using Medici’s unique explosive and magnetic mineral Bavarium, along with a vast military to conquer the world. There is a rebellion fighting a civil war against him, but it’s failing until Rico shows up to aid them.

Medici was reported to be «nearly 400» square miles but also sometimes «just over» 400 square miles. 400 square miles is the size of Panau, but it will be more densely full than Panau.

Before launch, Christofer Sundberg reported that «Beyond launch, we are likely to look into DLC packs and items as part of our ambition to support Just Cause 3 and its players for many years to come, but until that time we’re completely focused on making the best Just Cause game we possibly can.»

There are 3 large expansion packs that add additional areas, missions, vehicles, and weapons. In addition to that, there are a few smaller DLCs that add a few individual vehicles and weapons.

People playing on the PC can also use the Just Cause 3 Multiplayer.

Info summary

Just Cause 2 is an action-packed adventure game with one of the largest game maps ever. All gameplay is in an open world/sandbox and even most missions can be done in various creative ways.

Originally set to be released in 2008, it was pushed back multiple times until it was released on March 23, 2010, in the United States, and March 26, 2010, in Europe.

It could be bought in an original or limited edition which came with Rico’s Signature Gun, Bulls Eye Assault Rifle, Chevalier Classic, Agency Hovercraft, Chaos Parachute, and a double-sided Panauan Intel Map and Poster. All these items (other than the map) can be obtained as downloadable content.

There is also a free demonstration version of the game available for download.

This is the sequel to Just Cause, released in 2006.

A sequel, Just Cause 3, was released in 2015.

Gameplay

Rico Rodriguez — the protagonist of Just Cause (1) — is back, but now on the island of Panau in the Malay Archipelago. Rico, working for the Agency, has to infiltrate various factions and cause chaos around Panau to unseat the dictator Pandak «Baby» Panay.

The game is open-world, with all missions and storyline being optional, except the two introduction missions. There are very few interiors, but the islands of Panau are large and varied.

The grappling hook can now be deployed with a button rather than from the inventory and can be attached to any solid surface — including vehicles and people — and can also be used to tether objects together. Along with this, the player has a parachute which is capable of being instantly deployed anywhere whenever the player has gained enough momentum. When airborne, the player can grapple onto the ground or structures to pull themselves along.

The game runs on a heavily modified Avalanche Engine 2.0. The vehicle physics have also been completely re-worked and handling is dependent on the surface differently depending on the situation. There is also the ability to upgrade vehicles, a feature absent from the previous game. There are 104 vehicles for the player to use in Just Cause 2, including a flyable passenger jet and various military aircraft. There is also the new Black Market system replacing the heavy drop from the first game, allowing the player to instantly purchase weapons and special Agency vehicles.

The array of weapons is quite varied, from small handguns to Triggered Explosives and rocket launchers. The system has 2 slots for light weapons which can be Dual Wielded, 1 slot for a heavy weapon (such as a shotgun or rocket launcher), and slots for both explosives and Grenades, allowing the player to carry a selection of weapons at any one time. The grapple hook and parachute are both always equipped and are separate from the weapons. Furthermore, the grapple hook can be used as a melee weapon in times of need.

Trivia

• Gameinformer.com was given exclusive publishing rights for all new info during the first month after the announcement. People from that site reported having gotten to play the game for several hours.
• A few screenshots that were leaked a few days before the announcement (see below in the gallery) indicated that the new Black Market will use real money and introduce micro-transactions into the game. Christofer Sundberg, Avalanche Studios co-founder, and the chief creative officer has denied this and explained that the game will not have any microtransactions. «To be perfectly clear: Just Cause 3 will be available in 2015 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Windows PC. It will be distributed as a retail box and digital download. It is not a «Free To Play» game. It does not feature in-game microtransactions.» According to avalanchestudios.com, those screenshots show how they were considering different business models. That model was cancelled.
• See the locked archive page Just Cause 3 News for all the info that was slowly leaked and published before the announcement. The game was rumored to be under construction for over a year.
• By the time of the announcement, the game had been worked on for about 3 years (since 2011). We know this because that’s when the earliest known game artworks were drawn and when Roland Lesterlin was hired for «Project Mamba».
• During development, the codename for the game was «Project Mamba».
• Members of the development team that created «Burnout» have worked on JC3 to improve vehicle handling.
• This is one of the first nine games in the world to use Denuvo «anti-tamper technology», which is hoped to eliminate game piracy in the future.
• Until Just Cause 4’s mixed mission structure exceeding 30 or more, this game had the most storyline missions of any Just Cause game with 22 in total, exceeding Just Cause (1)’s 19 (though technically 21 due to the three parts).
• Until Mech Land Assault and/or Bavarium Sea Heist, it was possible to go through the entire game without a special weapon. While it certainly makes the game harder without a special weapon, this was still technically possible.
  • Rico wields a UVK-13 with unlimited rocket propelled grenades during Welcome Home, but drops it when Di Ravello’s CS7 Thunderhawks force Rico’s Urga U17 Akrobat to make a sharp turn. Rico falls into the canyon below and eventually reaches a small area with some dead rebels and finds another UVK-13. The weapon is not required to be picked up though, and never during any subsequent part of the game is Rico made to pick up a special weapon.
  • Mech Land Assault requires Rico to pick up two Power Cores during the first mission, but again a special weapon is not required at any other point during the DLC.
  • Bavarium Sea Heist requires Rico to pick up the eDEN Spark in the laboratory, marking only the second time a special weapon is required to be picked up, assuming one does Bavarium Sea Heist after Mech Land Assault.
• This is the first Just Cause game to have bullpup firearms.

General info

The game was rumored to be under construction for over a year, until it was announced on November 11, 2014. By the time of the announcement, the game had been worked on for about 3 years.

According to the developers, the Just Cause series is a proper sandbox and they are improving further on that. That means JC3 is even less story-focused. The map is also said to be much more densely full. The story will basically let the player know how to use the tools and the player will be able to use them anywhere.

In comparison to Just Cause 2, the storyline is now much longer, but there are no faction sidemissions. However, there are now Random Encounters (which can re-occur) and a lot more types of races and other challenges.

The game allows players to shoot their way through walls, blow up and pull down even bigger Radars and Statues, which will shatter into more pieces. You can even blow up an entire bridge if you’re being chased on it. «That is the scale of destruction we’re after, not really breaking a hole in the wall.»

«The Modding community has always been something spectacular in all games and any game that gets the love of the modding community is already in a good spot. A game that’s all about the sandbox — really in a good spot.» — A developer for Just Cause 3.

The game also has «volumetric terrain», which allows players to explore underground caves and climb tall buildings easier.

Just Cause 3 was officially announced by Square Enix at the 2015 E3 conference on June 16th. The game was released on December 1st, 2015.

This is the sequel to Just Cause 2, released in 2010.

A sequel, Just Cause 4, was released in 2018, three years and three days to the date this game was released.

Awards

• According to the PC and Xbox retail box cover, it’s the «winner of 10 E3 awards».
• According to Machinima, it’s the «number one craziest action game».

Patch and glitches

Just Cause 2 has over 100 relatively rare and relatively minor glitches (see Just Cause 2 Bugs and glitches). Note that not all versions of the game (PC, PS3, and Xbox 360) have the same glitches. A patch was released to fix some of those.

All versions of the game will either download it automatically or prompt an update when connected to the internet.

• PC: It is automatically downloaded by Steam.
• PS3: Came in the form of a «system update» when you open the game.
• Xbox 360: Initiates a prompt to update when you start the game while connected to the internet (i.e. Xbox Live).

What the patch fixes

• Sets uploaded YouTube videos as «public» by default.
• Fixes issues that would stop people and vehicles from spawning.
• Changes enemy artificial intelligence so they don’t fire on the player during the Hijacking quick time event.
• Fixes the Vanderbildt LeisureLiner’s spawning glitch. It used to be nonexistent, but even after the patch, the vehicle is still super rare.
• Adds «numerous stability improvements».
• Also related to video capture on the PS3 is a bug, where the game would stop suddenly after an extended play session and tell you the system had reached its limit on recording time. You would be prompted to discard the recording (or save it) and then your game and controller settings would all be set to zero: no volume, all hud options at lowest settings, controller options all pushed to lowest sensitivity, and so on. Players would have to go into each settings area — video, audio, and controls and push «Set to Defaults» to restore them and then invert the Y-axis the way one likes it before continuing to play. Many players found this very annoying and with this patch, while that pop-up message occurred, the settings aren’t lost.

Trivia

• As the story goes, Avalanche did not initially have any plans for a sequel game. They had been outsourced to develop some game for some other company, but somehow they lost the contract, so they quickly needed to have something to do. At this point, they looked through their list of previously made original games that they owned the rights for and chose Just Cause. The rest is history.
• In theory, it is possible to complete the game with only a one-handed weapon, as Rico is only required to have one one-handed weapon during Welcome to Panau. It’s only possible in theory because this likely makes a few missions (like Into the Den and A Just Cause) extremely difficult to a point of near impossibility.
• While it is possible one might think that Just Cause 3 was the first patched game in the series, this game was actually the first one, as the Vanderbildt LeisureLiner as an extremely rare vehicle used to not spawn at all. That was later fixed in a patch that while added it into the game, can still only rarely be found in the Berawan Besar Mountains, or Lautan Lama Desert.
