The Evil Within 2
Yukiko Hoffman was part of Team Alpha tasked with entering the STEM in order to locate it’s missing core, Lily Castellanos. She became separated from her team and was trapped there when Union began to collapse.
Sebastian Castellanos meets Hoffman while searching for Exit D5 through the Marrow, at the business end of a pistol. At first, she did not believe he was really the Sebastian Castellanos, believing him to be dead, but Sebastian convinced her he was alive. Using her skills as a psychologist, Hoffman was quickly able to determine that Sebastian is not a threat and lowers her weapon, and subsequently offers him shelter in her Safe House.
Some time after Sebastian leaves for Union’s business district, Hoffman is contacted by fellow Alpha Team member Liam O’Neal, who tells her to meet up with him in a restricted area of the Marrow where Mobius scientists have been studying and conducting tests on the Lost. Though she manages to meet up with O’Neal, she is horrified to discover that he has been transformed into a Harbinger. Sebastian catches up with them shortly thereafter, and finds Hoffman trying to talk some sense into O’Neal but to no avail. While she initially attempts to stop Sebastian from shooting as O’Neal, the latter traps her in the next room and reveals his identity to Sebastian, who is eventually able to defeat him.
In order to make up for her mistakes, she insists on accompanying Sebastian to Theodore Wallace’s stronghold, by keeping an experimental portable Stable Field Emitter functioning to protect him from the flames surrounding the compound.
She is killed at the entrance to Theodore’s stronghold when one of his Disciples tackled her, causing her to drop the stabilizer which breaks on impact, though Sebastian manages to make it safely to the entrance before realizing what happened. He tries to save Yukiko, but the force field collapses before he could, dooming her to a fiery demise.
Her last words were pleading with Sebastian to leave her and find Lily as fast as he could so they could escape together. Believing that if Sebastian were to do so, it would help make up for what she has done to him and to other victims of MOBIUS and STEM.
Кровосос из S.T.A.L.K.E.R.
Уже известно, что кровососы вернутся в ожидаемой S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2.
Trivia
- Stefano’s theme is Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s Serenade for Strings in C Major, Op. 48 Movement 1.
- Stefano seems to have a habit of marking the locations of his victims’ deaths with plaques bearing their name, as if he’s preparing them for exhibition. Predictably, he also has one with Sebastian’s name on it, though the latter manages to escape this grim fate by defeating him.
- One of Stefano’s photo studios can be found on the second floor of the Union City Hall during Chapter 5.
- Stefano’s gathered a collection of frozen Lost and displayed them in a room, as he couldn’t bear leaving them outside. He regretfully mentions in a note that he wished he could claim them as his own artworks, but was glad to see that there were other ‘artists’ in Union. It is later revealed that these ‘statues’ were Myra’s victims.
- Shooting Stefano at point-blank range with the Warden Crossbow will prompt him to backstep out of the way and say, «Balestra!» which is Italian for «crossbow».
- Stefano himself also seems to be somewhat familiar with the techniques of fencing, as evident by the terminology he uses during his boss fight (e.g «Appel», «Balestra» and «Reposte»).
- Uniquely, shooting Stefano with a Smoke bolt will prompt a mildly annoyed response from him, and he’ll say, «…Smoke? Really?»
- If shot with a Freeze bolt, upon breaking out of the ice, he’ll exclaim, «Son of a bitch!»

Trivia
- The burnt message «Don’t Go» found near the end of Side Mission: Rogue Signal was created by Theodore using Sebastian’s memories of Lily’s handwriting found at the back of their family photo. The burnt messages will make another appearance later when Theodore uses his apparition of Lily to torment Sebastian.
- Sebastian commented that Theodore’s handwriting looked like that of the Zodiac Killer’s.
- The version of Theodore Wallace encountered in the final game is markedly younger than the one shown in the reveal trailers, and sports a light five o’clock shadow rather than a full beard.
- Theodore’s cane has a distinct bloodhound motif, reinforcing the imagery of him being the ‘shepherd’ to his worshippers, a ‘flock of sheep’.
Relationships
Ruben Victoriano
Laura was Ruvik’s older sister and the only person who understood him. They clearly had a very close relationship and cared for each other. After the fire and Ruvik was told she was dead, he became depressed and finally snapped. He even went as far as to killing his parents, blaming them for everything that happened to him. It is unknown on how she felt after the fire during the Vegetative state, but it can be assumed she wished to be with him again.
Beatriz Victoriano
Their relationship was never put into detail but we can infer that they were on good terms. Beatriz passed on a lot of traits to her daughter, such as her long black hair and kindness.
Ernesto Victoriano
Although they were never seen interacting, we can assume they had a neutral relationship, unlike Ruvik. Ernesto knew of his children’s closeness, which caused strains in his relationship with Ruvik. It may also be implied that she may have been a safe border between her brother and father.
Appearance
Leslie has pale skin and white hair, and dark rings around his eyes, a possible result of extreme sleep deprivation, or insomnia. Another likely cause could be albinism, as his eyes have a faint pinkish hue to them. One of his front teeth has a large chip in it, while the rest of the set is poorly-maintained and seems to be mildly rotten.
He is almost always seen wearing a straightjacket owing to him being a mental patient. He is initially bound, though the sleeves came undone at the start of Chapter 3, after the ambulance crash.
He usually stands either hunched over or very upright, looking at the floor, with his hands either close together or over his ears.
The Assignment
The creature first appears shortly after Juli awakes from receiving the injection to protect her while she’s in the STEM. It simply watches her in the shadows before quickly leaving the area, startling Juli. The creature appears again soon after to kill a man hiding within an office.
Juli is crawling through the vents when «Shade» bursts into the office and attacks the man, bisecting him, before leaving with a trail of blood behind it. The creature can be heard while Juli roams the nearby areas before appearing a third time to inadvertently help her. While Juli hides in a locker from a Haunted the monster enters the room, Shade kills the Haunted and looks into the locker using the Spotlight before fleeing after hearing a noise in the hallway which distracts it.
The creature again appears in a reception room where Juli must hide behind the desk to avoid it from killing her. The monster again stops Juli in her tracks when it appears while she is waiting for the elevator, and she must hide and evade it to survive before escaping in the elevator as the creature looks on. The monster stalks Juli, spotting her at one point, before appearing a final time in The Assignment when Juli falls through the ground and ends up stuck underneath rubble.
The creature uses its Spotlight to turn dead Haunted into Cadavers which Juli must shoot to survive. After Juli has dealt with the Cadavers and Haunted the creature will attack her itself and after being shot several times it flees, and is not seen again for the rest of the DLC.
The Evil Within
After ambushing Sebastian and several others, he brings them into his own mindscape through the STEM somehow, with the world and all its terrors that Sebastian is forced to face all a manifestation of Ruvik’s own tormented psyche. Though interfering little with Sebastian’s progress early on, later chapters find Ruvik making direct contact with the detective, hunting him through the memory of his family’s manor. It is here that Ruvik hints that through his connections with Joseph Oda and Sebastian’s own mind that he knows full well of Sebastian’s own past and motivations. Remarking that it is unfortunate that Sebastian was involved, he nevertheless states his intentions to make use of the detective for his own means.
As Sebastian progresses, Ruvik begins to make himself more and more known, frequently warning the detective through eerie messages to cease his interference, and his intent to make the man suffer. Sebastian is not the only one to come into odds with Ruvik; though it is never seen, it is hinted that Julie has encountered Ruvik before, and knows more about him than she is willing to say, going so far as to realize Ruvik’s plans to use Leslie to escape.
At one point, Sebastian is led to the scene of the murders he had initially seen on the screen prior to being ambushed by Ruvik. He confronts Ruvik but is easily disarmed and held in a choke hold. Using his lantern, he sets Ruvik aflame similar to his initial burning in the barn all those years ago, forcing the man to finally drop him, and revealing his weakness to fire.
Final Encounter
Eventually, Sebastian and Leslie find themselves in Ruvik’s mental version of the STEM, a huge, pulsating brain connected with a variety of tubes and surrounded by an odd liquid. Despite Sebastian’s urging, Leslie approaches Ruvik, and is subsequently turned into the same liquid surrounding the mutated STEM. A horrific, giant monster then emerges, with Ruvik seemingly merged into the forehead of the beast as if acting as its brain, and engages Sebastian in a final fight. Eventually getting impaling on a spike, Sebastian manages to greatly weaken the beast Ruvik had become through a rocket launcher left by a corpse nearby. Ruvik then shifts into the mouth of the creature and attempts to devour Sebastian whole, but a final bullet stops him at last, shoving Sebastian into what appears to be the actual STEM machine room.
Fate
Sebastian witnesses one final vision of Ruvik before disconnecting Ruvik’s own disembodied brain from the STEM and violently stomping on it with his foot, putting an evident end to his existence. However, as Sebastian awakens and eventually leaves the hospital, he sees what appears to be Leslie walking away in the distance, the boy’s usual shuffling gait gone and replaced by slow, ominous pacing. Before Sebastian can react, a sudden headache causes him to lose focus, by the time he regains his composure, Leslie has vanished.
Relationships
Sebastian Castellanos
Stefano is Sebastian’s first actual threat after entering STEM in The Evil Within 2. Starting from the beginning to the end, their relationship is antagonistic, but at times Stefano will intentionally mess with Sebastian for fun such as taunting him over his communicator with Lily crying for help. Stefano at points will want Sebastian to «appreciate his art» to the point of almost obsession. After Sebastian destroys two of Stefano’s sadistic art pieces and confronts him in the Grand Theater, the mad artist decides that he is bored of Sebastian and attempts to kill him. This fight would prove to be fatal and results in Stefano’s demise.
Theodore Wallace
Initially working towards bringing Lily to Theodore, Stefano had second thoughts once he learned of the true scope of her potential and intends to keep her for himself. This puts him at odds with the scheme of his old master, whom he intends to eliminate after obtaining the full extent of the Core’s power. Despite this, Stefano was brought down himself before he can realize this plan.
Lily Castellanos
Not much is gleaned from their brief interactions other than the fact that Stefano was sent by Theodore Wallace to capture Lily so that they can obtain her powers to take over MOBIUS and the world at large. Stefano does, by admission, intend to somehow subvert Lily’s mind to unlock her powers, slowly and painfully if he has to, so that he can be free to create his «art» forever.
Juli Kidman
Juli apparently knows of Stefano and his colored past, and was the one to provide Sebastian with a run down of the mad artist’s dossier after mentioning his name. Likely due to her knowing what type of individual he was, Kidman is evidently relieved after hearing the news of Stefano’s demise.
Strategy
- During the tunnel encounter right before the actual fight, the Quell will be waiting for Sebastian in one of the holes above him. Walking underneath its roost will cause it to grab Sebastian and initiate a quick-time event. Alternatively it could be shot to scare away, as its head is plainly visible if one looks up.
- The Quell cannot catch the player with its sliding attack if they circle strafe in place.
- The Quell is vulnerable to being frozen via , which can be used to allow the player to line up some shots with powerful weapons like the Magnum or Sniper Rifle, or tag it with an Explosive Bolt.
- During its cloaked phase, the Quell will constantly hiss and excrete its slime, letting observant players know where it is. The larval spawns it creates can also be used to track it down, as all it does while invisible is generating them and waiting for Sebastian to come in range.
- As such, the larval spawns can be farmed indefinitely for ammo and other supplies.
- The Quell will start spawning the first batch of larvae before it leaps away to hide. Shooting these while they are being spawned will deal damage to the parent creature.
Appearance
The Administrator is depicted as a tall man with a lean figure dressed in a black business suit, wearing a red necktie patterned with geometric rectangle design.
Within STEM, he was primarily depicted as a shadowy figure and on occasion, an aura of black smoke/mist would surround him. His face was often obscured by darkness, with his left hand being one of the few distinguishing features, as there is a huge scar on the palm of his hand that resembled the logo/symbol of Mobius. In STEM, he was able to teleport and conjure monstrous, clawed limbs through the shadow he casts. When light was cast upon him, his face shifted to that of a heavily scarred monster, bearing a large glowing red scar on his face also resembling the Mobius logo/symbol. When he was finally defeated by Kidman, his true face was revealed as that of an adult male Caucasian with short swept hair, which is accurate of his real-life appearance.
Relationships
Sebastian Castellanos
- «Krimson City needs more men like him on the force and it’s an honor to be working with him.«
- ―Sebastian, writing about Joseph
Joseph Oda is Sebastian’s steadfast partner, and the two have been working together for 9 years. They have opposing personalities, but the contrast works in their favor, although occasionally Joseph has to help keep Sebastian in line.
Despite initially being optimistic about working with Joseph, Sebastian’s slow descent into alcoholism has turned their partnership sour. Concerned with Sebastian’s safety, Joseph filled a report to Internal Affairs, which saved Sebastian his job, but created an emotional rift between them.
During the events of the game, Sebastian shows dedication in protecting Joseph, going so far as to put Joseph’s well-being above his. Despite the events of the past, the friendship that the two have is still very apparent.
Juli Kidman
- «Joseph, as usual, tells me that I’m being oversensitive. I think he’s got a crush on her, maybe…«
- ―Sebastian, writing about how Joseph thinks he’s being oversensitive about Kidman
In The Consequence, it shows that when Kidman was first being transferred to KCPD, Joseph wasn’t too thrilled that Sebastian wanted to train her, not wanting them to have to deal with a rookie. However, later on during her training, he grows more respect for her to the point where Sebastian believes he has a crush on her. In contrast, as he sinks into alcoholic depression, Sebastian ironically later comes to see training her as «babysitting duty» and even starts to suspect that she’s hiding something. Joseph calls him oversensitive for this.
After Juli and Joseph fall through the floor inside STEM, he becomes a Haunted and she has to fight him. She has to attack him three times before he turns back into a normal person. He then drops to the ground. She is shown to be upset about having to hurt him and says he should’ve just stayed out of the way.
After this Kidman is not seen physically interacting with Joseph until he and Sebastian find her leading Leslie through a park. She ends up accidentally shooting Joseph instead of Leslie when the earthquake happens, running after Leslie in the confusion.
Oscar Connelly
Their relationship is not heavily explored, though it can be assumed they were on good terms. However, they both seemed much more susceptible to Ruvik’s influence than Sebastian or Kidman.
Leslie Withers
The interaction between these two has been brief (when he tries to reach Leslie but is shot by Kidman), so their relationship is unknown.
Ruvik
- «Will you be able to live with yourself knowing what I’m going to make you do? Poor little Joseph couldn’t…«
- ―Ruvik talking about Joseph to Sebastian
Though they’re never seen interacting on screen, there’s implications that can be used to figure out what their relationship is like. Ruvik seems to treat Joseph as if he’s a pawn in his plans. Like Connelly, Joseph appears to be much more susceptible to Ruvik’s influence than Sebastian or Juli. However, he is not as susceptible as Connelly, as he is seen fighting against the urges to turn into a Haunted. Ruvik also taunts Sebastian by mentioning Joseph, and how he can’t live with himself because of what Ruvik made him do (turning and attempting to kill Kidman). It can also be said that he used Joseph as an example to show Juli that the people you trust can turn on you in an instant.
Background
Neun is the conjoined twin brother of fellow mutant Zehn. Abandoned at birth, Neun and his brother were taken in by the members of the Cedar Hill Church cult to serve as guinea pigs for their experiments. The twin were surgically separated and administered a special growth serum that caused rapid physiological changes. Within the first two days of the experiment, the infants grew to be as large as a young adult, but also left heavy mental scarring in them.
Physically, Neun appears much less malformed than Zehn, though his mentality paints a different picture. While Zehn was left a gibbering lump after the experiment, Neun became exceedingly violent and angry, and had to be heavily restrained to keep his homicidal urges in check. Traces of various cuffs and other binding implements can still be found on his body.
It is unclear whether Neun was in the same state of mutation when encountered as he was during the experiment, or that he and Zehn were additionally transformed due to the influences of Ruvik, though if such was the case it did little to curb his thirst for violence.
The Last of Us: Part 2
The Last of Us: Part 2.
The Last of Us: Part 2.
Reception
The review aggregator website Metacritic gave the PC version of The Evil Within 2 a 81/100 rating, denoting «generally favorable reviews». According to aggregate scores, the Xbox One port of the game is considered to be the best, sitting at a 82/100 score, while the PlayStation 4 release is regarded as the worst (76/100) due to a multitude of bugs and less-than-optimal optimisation compared to the other versions. Regardless, The Evil Within 2 was considered a commercial success and was nominated for several 2017 Game of the Year awards.
The Evil Within 2 received a much more favorable opinion from critics than its predecessor, with praises aimed at its much more balanced ratio between gameplay and narrative. The departure from the first installment’s chapter-based storytelling was noted to have been a major improvement, and the game’s open-world design, while not received as well, was lauded for the many interesting narrative opportunities it creates.
Trivia
- Tatiana is likely of Hispanic ancestry given the combination of her first and last names.
- If the player waits long enough at the title screen without pressing any button, a shadow of Tatiana can be seen walking past the door.
- Tatiana was planned to sell items and upgrades to Sebastian in a role similar to that of the Merchant in Resident Evil 4, but this was later scrapped when Tango came up with the idea of the chair and Green Gel.
- At one early point in the game’s designing phases, Tatiana was almost cut out entirely due to the radically-changed concepts which dictated many characters’ themes and personalities. In the end, however, Tatiana was one of a small handful revived and brought back to the game proper. Her background and occupation was changed to that of a nurse, and serves as one of Sebastian’s most important and pivotal allies in the game(s).
- Tatiana is quite popular with staff members at Tango.
- According to the model viewer, she was a nurse in the locked ward who became emotionally dead. However it is possible this is wrong, as a nurse who wears the same clothes and similar hair can be seen dead at the front office of Beacon when in the «real world».
- Her theme song is «Clair de lune» from Claude Debussy’s Suite bergamesque. The same tune is hummed eerily by Anima in the second game.
- Talking to Tatiana just before the fight with the Matriarch reveals that she is actually a psychological imprint of STEM onto Sebastian’s psyche, leaving her a permanent part of his mentality whenever he is hooked into a STEM world, which explains her out-of-the-blue appearance in the sequel. By her own admission, Tatiana represents Sebastian’s «inner strength».
