Surprise has the same coat and mane colors and partly cutie mark as Lauren Faust’s concept art of Pinkie Pie, based on a G1 Pegasus mare also named Surprise; as the Pegasus mare Breezie from the fifth and fifteenth waves of and ; and as from the IDW comics’ . Surprise usually has the same mane and tail style as Blaze, «», and and the same tail style as «», but , instead has the same mane and tail style and eye color as in Faust’s concept art.
Surprise, along with Soarin and as well as Dane Tee Dove, Lady Gaval, and Tall Order, was to appear in Friendship is Magic, part 1.

Development and name

The name «Philomena» is of Greek origin, meaning «powerful love». The name’s English spelling is Philomena, though on the show’s storyboard by Sabrina Alberghetti it shows up as «Philemena». One of Hasbro’s online coloring pages, a question on Hasbro’s My Little Pony page, and a tweet by Hasbro’s My Little Pony account spell the name «Philomeena». The 2012 My Little Pony use «Philomena» and list it as a trademark.

According to A Bird in the Hoof writer Charlotte Fullerton, Philomena was originally named Phoebe; this name would be used by for her human Phoebe and Her Unicorn character who appears in a picture on Phoenix Comics & Games (and Everfree Northwest) exclusive cover RE of .

In late June 2015, Jim Miller was asked «Will we see Philomena on the show ever again or is she stuck to Princess Celestia’s quarters?» and answered «Never say never. But no current plans to see her any time soon.»

Depiction in the series

Surprise slack-jawed in The Ticket Master.

Surprise first appears in Rainbow Dash’s imagination in The Ticket Master alongside Soarin and Blaze. Rainbow imagines herself impressing the Wonderbolts so much that they let her join them. She later appears in The Best Night Ever, once again in Rainbow Dash’s fantasy of flying with the Wonderbolts as well as in the Wonderbolts’ V.I.P. section at the Grand Galloping Gala.

Surprise, with her mane a darker shade of yellow, appears as one of the Pegasi fighting against a monstrous Spike in Secret of My Excess, alongside Blaze and High Winds. Spike traps her and her fellow Wonderbolts inside a water tower. Near the end of the episode, when they’re finally freed, Surprise trembles with fear before striking a heroic pose and flying off with Blaze and High Winds.

Surprise later appears with her usual mane color in Rainbow Falls, watching the Cloudsdale cheerleaders.

Surprise makes a background appearance in Rarity Investigates! In Newbie Dash, Surprise’s eyes are revealed to be raspberry, and she has a speaking role in which she laughs at Rainbow Dash after she fails to impress the Wonderbolts. Surprise gives Rainbow a nickname «Rainbow Crash», and she reveals her Wonderbolts nickname as «Slowpoke».

In season seven, Surprise appears at a Wonderbolts autograph session in Parental Glideance and flying with other Wonderbolts in Marks and Recreation and Secrets and Pies.

In The Ending of the End — Part 2, Surprise and the other Wonderbolts take part in the final battle against Queen Chrysalis, Lord Tirek, and Cozy Glow. In The Last Problem, Surprise flies with the Wonderbolts during Twilight’s coronation ceremony.

Personality

In The Times They Are A Changeling, Thorax, unlike most of his kind, is demonstrably amiable and considerate with a sincere yearning for friendship. However, prior to meeting Spike, he bears much doubt that anyone could ever want to be friends with a changeling. When offered kindness or surrounded by love, Thorax occasionally reverts to his basic impulses and hisses threateningly at others.

In the two-part season six finale, Thorax is shown to panic when a situation turns dire, even to the point of hyperventilation, though he sticks with the rest of the rescue team despite his fears. He looks to Starlight Glimmer for leadership, and he demonstrates selflessness such that he puts on her appearance to spare her Chrysalis’ wrath until she can destroy the queen’s throne.

In Triple Threat, Thorax is shown to be excitable and curious, but at the same time, he struggles with the weight of his new leadership role, admitting to Spike that he has trouble asserting his authority. He is also very protective of Spike, transforming into a bear and challenging Ember when he believes she is threatening him. After the misunderstanding is cleared up, Ember helps him to be more assertive, which he demonstrates by calling Spike out on the lack of attention during his visit.

In To Change A Changeling, Thorax shows a strong sense of loyalty towards his brother, Pharynx, stemming from Pharynx always defending him from bullies when they were young. He is steadfast in his belief that there is good in Pharynx, refusing to banish him from the hive for his behavior, and pointing out to Pharynx that he still cares about the hive despite all the changes.

In School Daze, Thorax is displeased at Chancellor Neighsay’s prejudiced attitude against non-ponies, but takes it better than the other leaders, acknowledging that not all ponies see the changelings as Twilight and her friends do. When the assembled leaders show concern about the missing students, Thorax is the only one who doesn’t blame any of the others, instead worrying that the changelings won’t be able to survive if a conflict breaks out between their respective species, and feeling hurt when Ember accuses him of hiding them. Upon a second encounter with Neighsay’s bigotry, Thorax seems to share the displeasure of the other leaders and joins them in advancing on the unicorn, though Celestia convinces them not to become violent.

In Uprooted, he shows anger and disappointment at Ocellus for leaving the hive without telling anyone and attempts to bring her back before he is convinced to let her stay with her friends to honor the Tree of Harmony.

Англоязычный фэндом отслеживает появление всех эпизодических и фоновых персонажей в анимации и комиксах. Их учёт ведётся на MLP Wiki. Chapter books

By chapter 6 of Rainbow Dash and the Daring Do Double Dare, «Heating Up», Snips and Snails had dared Rainbow Dash to swim to the bottom of . Snips and Snails also appear in the Ponyville Mysteries books Schoolhouse of Secrets and The Tail of the Timberwolf, teasing Sweetie Belle for being a «scaredy-pony» in the latter.

IDW comics

For , Snips appears on the Larry’s Comics cover RE, the Jetpack Comics cover RE, and one of the Larry’s Comics and Jetpack Comics covers RE.

In the story arc Zen and the Art of Gazebo Repair, Snips appears on page 8 watching Trixie’s puppet show and pages 4-5 demonstrating his talent for cutting things. In the — story arc Don’t You Forget About Us, he gets lost with the Cutie Mark Crusaders, Snails, Diamond Tiara, and Silver Spoon during a class field trip.

In , Snips steals pins from the Ponyville bowling alley in an effort to protect his grandfather ‘s bowling record.

SNIPS and SNAILS are two young Unicorns who are the best of friends. Snips is known for his enthusiasm, while Snails is known to be slightly more relaxed.

SNIPS and SNAILS are pony pals with a bit of a naughty streak. Impish Snails[sic] is balanced out by happy-go-lucky Snails. Together, they’re quite a pair!

Cutie marks

Cutie Marks

A cutie mark, a mainstay of My Little Pony, is a special mark on a pony’s flank showing an icon related to their special talent.

During Call of the Cutie, Cheerilee tells her students that no amount of pleading, wishing, or begging will make a cutie mark happen before its time, and that the best thing to do is wait. Different ponies develop different special talents as they mature, and at different times; for instance, Rarity’s special skill is gem-finding, Fluttershy’s is caring for animals, Rainbow Dash’s is speed, Applejack’s is apple farming, and Pinkie Pie’s is party-throwing.

One prominent example of a pony finding her talent is Twilight Sparkle. During a flashback in The Cutie Mark Chronicles, she studies hard at magic and her parents enroll her in Celestia’s School for Gifted Unicorns. The sonic rainboom spurs her powerful magic into action, showing that she has enough raw magic ability to turn her parents into foliage and enlarge an infant Spike. Princess Celestia informs Twilight that she’s never seen that much raw talent in a unicorn before, and her cutie mark subsequently appears.

Development and design

Snails is a golden colored colt with an aquamarine mane and tail and light yellow freckles, resembling Generation 1 baby pony Squirmy. He is notably lankier and thinner than other ponies, much like Celestia or Luna, Fancy Pants’ companion Fleur Dis Lee or Mrs. Cake’s husband, Mr. Carrot Cake. His irises are usually not visible outside of My Little Pony: Pony Life, similarly to those of Snips, but they are sometimes visible in the IDW comics, varying between dark brown on ‘s page 14 and dark blue on ‘s Hot Topic RE cover.

Snails has a goofy manner of speech which, in contrast to Snips’ higher voice, is quite low and slow. This tone and his use of the word «eh» is reminiscent of a stereotypical Canadian accent.

Both Snails, as well as his best friend Snips, are named after the traditional nursery rhyme What Are Little Boys Made Of?. A version of the verse goes:

What are little boys made of?

What are little boys made of?

Snips and Snails and Puppy Dogs’ tails

That’s what little boys are made of.

According to Lauren Faust, originally Snips and Snails’ sizes were reversed; Snips was the bigger one and Snails was the smaller one.

Development

Scootaloo is based on the Generation 3 Earth pony of the same name, who has a pink and purple mane and tail (occasionally ponytails in the Core 7 serials) and a butterfly cutie mark. However, her color scheme is based on that of Sparkleworks, another Generation 3 Earth pony. Scootaloo is also Cheerilee’s younger sister in Generation 3; in Generation 4, Scootaloo and Cheerilee have no indicated familial relationship, and Cheerilee has a twin sister named .

Scootaloo’s cutie mark in and is the same as her G3/G3.5 counterpart’s, and was chosen by layout artist prior to her work on the show.

According to Lauren Faust, Scootaloo was «originally conceived as getting in a lot of schoolyard fights over being picked on for not flying.»

In a mid-May 2017 Twitter conversation, Jim Miller stated that the CMCs’ Flash rigs are the same as S1.
